Bullet fully expanded in the chest cavity and did not penetrate into the abdomen.  Almost passed on him but it was my birthday and seemed like a fitting gift for myself. I hunt to fill the freezer, not to mount on the wall so I didn't want to risk not running into any other deer the rest of the season. What is funny is that this hill is the same hill I shot a 3x4 mulie from last year.

Worked last night, had to get up early for a dental appointment and almost didn't go. Got back in the same stand as before this afternoon and just like the earlier 8-pt, this guy came out about thirty minutes before quitting time, from about the same location, and eased along the edge of the woods.

After getting lucky seeing the 8-pt Tuesday night due to the small gap that allows a visual to the field, I cut a few limbs to provide a little more view before going home. It paid off as I got a couple extra seconds to look this guy over.

He was a little farther out at about 140ish yards. Hit him a little high but he dropped in his tracks. Glad I went this evening, can't kill em sitting on the couch.

Closer pic.

My son, 8, crossbow.  Unfortunately, we didn’t find him for a few days after he shot it.  So, we lost the meat and cape.

Rifle season started yesterday. Hunted most of the day yesterday and out again this morning at 7am.

Lunchtime buck following a doe through the woods. I had just moved to a new spot, and literally had just sat down. I was putting my gun up on the rest as sort of a practice look, and as I'm looking down the scope a doe walks into the frame, and I instinctively popped my head up, just out of surprise.

She saw me do that, and as I went to get back down behind the scope, she took off. Not five minutes later, this guy came moving through the woods on the same path she followed. I saw him coming and had the gun up. As soon as he stepped out, I got him. He did two big jumps up in the air and fell over right there.

6.5 Grendel, 123 gr SST handload.

Definitely. Light rain all morning long. Hit the stand at 2pm once it stopped and the 8 pointer strolled by 45 min later.  Really couldn’t have asked for better timing. Good luck everyone this weekend!

My first deer ever. It’s a cull 6 point buck. I will be going on a doe hunt this upcoming January at the same ranch. Amazing people, Amazing animals, and a great time all around.

Shot it at 30 yards with my Savage Model 12 LRP in 6.5 creedmoor using federal fusion. Solid double lung shot, ran 20 yards and died.

It’s gonna taste great!

Sorry I need to learn how to post pics. Thanks for the congrats, I’m looking forward to January now like crazy! After he was gutted and quartered, I have about 51 pounds of meat.

I have gone ahead and buried the skull (except the antlers) and will let the bugs eat at it. Come May I’m gonna dig it up, wash it off, spray the skull with bleach and let it sit out for a few days. My FIL does this to all of his bucks and would like me to continue to carry on the torch.

TLDR: Euro deer mount

Cool, I'd use hairdresser's peroxide over bleach though. Bleach can ruin the bone.

They make a peroxide cream paste you can paintbrush on and cover in a trash bag overnight and hose off in the am. Repeat if you want it whiter. Just keep it off the antlers.

Some years I've been skunked with 20+ sits, while other times I've been fortunate to bring home a deer (or two). I have trail cameras but this year there have been virtually no deer on them.

Today's hunt was incredible! Not only did my brother take his first deer, a nice heavy doe, but my also buddy tagged a small buck, while I double tagged on a solid 8pt and a doe. All in the span of roughly half an hour!  Then when we decided to get down 2 more came rolling through, but spooked hard when they walked up on one of the downed deer. I have never before seen action like this on the property, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience!

Shot on 11/7 game zone 2 in SC

I wasn’t in the stand five minutes (1pm) when he came chasing two does about 80-90yds right of where I was facing.  Repositioned and tried to halt him but he was focused on the ladies.  Shot him at a trot with a 168gr Nosler Ballistic Tip .308 handload and he crumpled on the spot

Gonna do a euro mount to match my sons first Buck from the week before

10 year old daughter crushed this doe yesterday morning. We were sitting over a field where doe are known to graze in the morning.

Had been out for maybe an hour, could tell she was getting restless. I let out a bleat and almost immediately she came out from a trail but was walking right towards us. We were on the ground, and she saw us.

We both remained calm, didn't move. I had my daughter's .243 mounted in a tripod for stability, and she was already up behind the scope. Doe walked to about 40 yards, sniffing the air trying to identify us. Eventually she blew and sort of lazily trotted away. I made a 'meep' noise, like textbook she stopped broadside to check on the noise and my daughter pulled the trigger.

She ran across the field, maybe 20 yards plus another 15 or so into the woods. Daughter actually spotted the blood to get us on her trail. Crumpled up next to a tree. Double lung and hit an artery.

This is her first harvest, she's stoked. Now she wants a buck to euro mount and hang in her room.

As a father these are the times we dream about when our kids are babies.... Taking them out hunting, hoping they have fun, hoping they want to come back. Heck I bought her muddy girl camo rifle like 5 years ago waiting on this day I feel really fortunate.

Opening Connecticut Shotgun Season on water company property.

I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day!
At 7:45am I watched a doe come out of the swamp and let her pass expecting a buck to follow. When I looked around the left side of the tree I was sitting against to see where she was, I saw the horns of this deer bedded. I looked around the right side of the tree I saw the doe walking away.

I got my first deer on Thursday! Just bought a wicked ridge / tenpoint m-370 and started shooting over the summer. I was hunting private land in 46060 and got this guy just moments before the hunt was going to end. Shot a 20" Carbon Express piledriver with a Swacker #207 broadhead. Super close range from a ground blind. I saw this younger buck coming towards me and luckily he turned about 10 yards out and I let him have it. He only made it about 50 yards. Super cool to be part of this community - two experienced buddies showed up immediately to show me the process of field dressing. Dropped the deer at the processor for a bunch of ground venison and some sausage. Gonna have the cape mounted and I received a text just now that the meat is ready to be picked up. I'm hoping to take a doe with the crossbow in the next couple of weeks and I will definitely be getting my deer tags again next year.

Good for her! Looks like a great hit, she did her part well.

Taking a kid out and watching things come together is better than getting one of your own.

Nice deer for a first, he'll look great on the wall.

Great to see you're getting the meat back so fast too, enjoy.

ETA-With bases that thick there's a chance he could be older than you think, ask your taxidermist to take a look at the teeth if he gets time.

At 7:45am I watched a doe come out of the swamp and let her pass expecting a buck to follow. When I looked around the left side of the tree I was sitting against to see where she was, I saw the horns of this deer bedded. I looked around the right side of the tree I saw the doe walking away.
