Likewise, and I've had the same concern.  I got the stand finished and have been clearing out scrub sapwood bushes/trees and pulling down a few tons of vines.  More vines/bushes need to be piled and burned yet or they may interfere with prior travel routes. It looks like a bomb went off in there at the moment.

Deer-view:

There's a pasture about 30 yards behind the stand.

Built a water guzzler.  Hopefully its enough to hold rain water all summer/fall.  Will be drained before the freeze.

Don't forget to put some kind of step in that so the critters can get out.

I have no year around standing water on my north 80.  I got a 110 gallon rubberized plastic stock tank at TSC and buried it to ground level.  I had been saving the 2.5 gallon plastic containers the cat litter comes in and it wasn't too hard to get it filled.  2 years later I've only had to add about 25 gallons of water during a late summer dry spell.

Turkeys and deer started using it within a month and several frogs have taken up residence.  My one acre clover food plot and mineral site are nearby, this year I'm planting evergreens on the north and east side for windbreaks and cover.

Start rolling my own shotgun slugs.

Get a dedicated rifled barrel slug gun.

Improve my slug shooting bench technique.

Explore the shotgun-only areas to the south of me prior to the season opener.

Stock up on aspirin to keep the shoulder swelling to a minimum.

Indeed!

I have resisted buying a dedicated slug gun for years but last season I saw an honest trophy buck on the edge of an orchard that is in a shotgun-only town to the south of me.

He needs to be introduced to one of those LBC style slugs.

I know what you mean - I picked up a crossbow so that I can be in the woods during our rut - that is when you see the big boys running around being all stupid!

I added to the mineral sites today.  Trail cams show the deer are hitting these pretty hard.  Added just a bit of water to my "ponds", 110 gallon stock tanks from TSC.  Deer and turkeys use these everyday.

About 100 days until archery season.

I still gotta fix the disc to get so I can get in and get the dirt turned in my food plot........infact I need to get something planted in there and start baiting with corn before the September 1st ban on feeding deer.

I want to get a tree-stand. Ground hunting spooks the deer too easily around here.

Perhaps I'll go all arfcom and put a magnified optic on my 16" 300blk rifle.

Which one?

I typed way to fast to get 1 of 750 limited antlerless tags for a specific WMU. So if its brown its down this year.

Now its practicing with a slug barrel so I can finally land a deer, since my old state can't manage deer populations for nothing.
