I Saw a nice 77/44 rifle and an older 44mag semi auto rifle and wanted
To know if anyone has had success out to 200 yards with the 44 on deer or hogs?

200 yards is kind of stretching it but under 100 yards just perfect.

Maybe 200!  Sometimes that buck of a lifetime comes out. But mostly 100 yards and in here in the Midwest.

I've been somewhat unimpressed with the trajectory of my 44 mag lever gun.  I really think 357 is the way to go when it comes to deer and pistol caliber rifles.

No. I'll stick with a wide 44mag hardcast

I'll stick with my Ruger 44 carbine with it's Leuopold scope on it. Deadly out to 100 yards.

200yds is stretching it. I did know one guy (deceased now) who had an Encore and had taken more than 1 deer at around that distance but he spent a lot of time with that rifle and knew it very well. 150yds is it for me with my 1894.

I would not try a deer past 100 yards with my Ruger Deerstalker in .44 mag.  Mine does not have a prefix before the serial number which means it has the pre litigation trigger. This gun is very accurate, will shoot under 1" when I do my part with Federal 240 gr. Hydra Shocks. The factory 240 grain XTP is another good load but not good enough for 200 yards.

My boss has had great performance with his new M77/357 this year. He has used the leverevolution and some brand of hard cast loads with DRT results. All shots were less than 75 yards though and our deer are on the small size, 100 to 125 lbs.

Safe hunting!

What's the best twist rate for a 44mag using 300 grainers? 305??

Do not no about a carbine. I would think 150 to 200 if you have experience. 200 being absolute max. I have taken several out to 50 yards with a Ruger Red Hawk using 240 grain slugs.  I limit myself to 50 yards because that is the farthest and can consistently hit a 1 gallon water jug at. I use that as a heart lung reference.

How about a TC encore in 44?

Good gun; not sure what you are asking?

If I had a gun like that lever or auto I might use it iron sighted for hogs in swampland, but I just use a 30-30 for that which will also work for deer or black bear.

I used my Dad's old Ruger Deer Stalker to take a decent 6pt a few years ago at 120yds, it stole its heart and made it easy to find in the brush.  200yds, I'd have to get a fire plan from the FDC ( artillary Fire Direction Center) for that shot.

I'm in the 100ish yd club on the 44Mag but if you have put in a lot of range time and know you and your rifle's limitation go for it.

Ran the numbers for my 44Mag Marlin after running my load over the chrono:

YDS - Drop

 0  -  -1.5"

50 -  +2"

100 - +2.7"

150 - 0"

200 - -7.1"

Not that bad.

Not bad, what load are you using?

I'm a little reluctant to post the load; it's over for every manual I have (or load posted on line for that matter) except 1. (& not just a half a grain or so in the majority of them) I have never seen signs of pressure issues from MY rifle, but I worked my way up to it and was ready to stop at the first sign of problems.

about 900 supposedly - I really don't get excited about that number though

I use a H&R Handi Rifle in .44 Mag. I shot a buck at about 125yds with it a couple years ago and it ran probably 300yds before falling over. I probably wouldn't push it much farther than that. Most of my shots are sub 75yds and the deer don't run far.

i would feel comfortable around 125 yd with a 77/44 and factory ammo.  With a good hardcast bullet I would try a hog at 150 yd to see how it performs.  The only deer I have shot with a 44mag was from a 77/44 and 180 gr Hornady XTP ammo.  That shot was at about 50-60 yards.  Took out both lungs and he ran about 50 yd before going down.  The 180 gr XTP I have heard is a little light for hogs, but it works well on deer in my opinion.

Is that for a 240 gr. load?

Yes

I used my 77/44 to take a small doe last fall.  She was about 75 yards away and I punched her right behind the shoulder with a 240 gr. XTP running about 1700 fps.  She made it about 40 yards before piling up.

Everything worked just fine, however I was surprised that the xtp didn't leave an exit hole and didn't leave a blood trail.  I didn't need it as I saw her go down.  I've switched to some 300 gr. XTPs to try and get them to poke all the way through next time.

Yeah, I lean toward JSP's or hard cast in a PCR (rifle in a handgun type cartridge) for deer.

I've got a Ruger Deerfield carbine. Only shots have been 50 yards and in, but it's a heck of a woods gun. Groups run about 2-3" at 100 yards.

I have a 77/44 and would not attempt a deer shot over 100yds with it.
It may kill one farther, but I wouldn't want to chance a wounded animal dying a slow death.
Hogs, I have no idea about, because there is none in this area.
