I like being the one at deer camp that has something different than all the others guys. When everyone starts uncasing their rifles the evening before its always the same old song and dance .243, 270 3006 on one side then their are the guys that have the magna magnums, short magnums, super duper short magnums .

These are my two and the only non AR rifles I own

Ruger M77R In .350 Remington Magnum on top and a Ruger KM77 RSI in .257 Roberts on bottom

35 Remington

45-70

25-06

Most everybody here seems to use a 300 win mag, 30-06 or 270 for deer.

I love that little caliber.

There would be something cool to having a "conversation" caliber.  Especially when they perform so well.

I, however, don't own such a rifle right now.  30-06 will do whatever I want it to do.

Good looking rifles OP.

Given the opportunity I'll take an "oddball" any day over more mundane offerings. My all-time favorite deer rifle was a Winchester Mod. 70 Featherweight in 7x57mm Mauser. I've also hunted with 7.5x55mm Swiss and .303 British, 1896/11 Schmidt-Rubin and No.1 Mk.III* (1943 Lithgow) respectively - as-issued, of course.

If dreams could come true I'd have one of every "oddball" caliber Mod. 70 Featherweights ever produced.

Ohio is an odd ball state for allowable deer hunting cartridges.

So right now its this Marlin 444S

Link Posted: 3/31/2015 1:05:17 PM EDT

I have been hunting them with 410 slugs out of a Winchester 9410 for the past several years.  Last year Ohio finally allowed use of some straight wall rifle cartridges so I picked up a Rossi M92 in 44 Mag.

I have shot a lot of deer with a 7-08 remington. It was more of an oddball when my dad purchased it for me at an NWTF auction in 1994 than they are now. He has repossessed that one, and so I just purchased another, a new production Winchester M70 Super Grade. Am awaiting delivery as we speak. It will be outfitted with my trusted Swarovski 3x9x40 mm. Can't wait to start reloading 7-08 again.

Only thing I have that I could use to hunt deer right now is my Garcia Bronco .22/.410 O/U using .410 slugs. Certainly an oddball gun!

I use a 7mm Remington Magnum. Not really uncommon, but doesn't seem to be that common either. Most of the hunters I know use .30-30, .30-06, and .308 Winchester.

I use Jap 99 in 7.7x58 for deer.

Brass is made from 30-06/.270 win.  Bullets from 7.62x39 (150 grain).

Gun was $185.00 with Fajen stock.  $20.00 for scope mount and nameless scope that has horrible parallax at 50 yards.

ETA:  I did use Springfield 1878 Trapdoor last year to kill a spike.  But it was my daughter's boyfriend's gun.  So, I guess that won't count.

I first did it to show my buddy (new to hunting) that has to buy everything top notch in multiples (Rem 5R with Swarovski) that you don't need all those to kill a deer sitting in a blind at 30 yards from the feeder.

But I started to like the gun.  It is ugly (like me) but does the job.

Just 400gr. Fusion on deer. Used 400gr. Barnes X in Africa. It also worked great on animals of all sizes.

Love that Ruger.  Beautiful wood, a highly under-appreciated caliber, controlled-feed (for when Bambi goes on the warpath...)

Really cool.

I too like weird calibers.

I have a Model Seven in 7mm SAUM, a Browning BLR take-down in .358 Win, and of course, the red-headed stepchild of the AR community, the .300 BLK.  I also wouldn't hesitate to use my K31 in 7.5x55 to take a deer (loaded with the right bullet, of course.)

I use the boring calibers to hunt with: 243, 30-30, 30-06. These 3 are reliable, there's a ton of data available, between them i can kill any animal on the continent, and I can get any of them in any store in the US that sells ammo. In fact, I have a policy that I won't own any caliber that I can't buy in the super wal mart. The only caveat is that I will only use hornady lerverutions in the 30-30. I normally use winchester gray box for the 30-06 and the 243, but anything will work for a deer at least, as long as its zeroed.

.280 Remington.  Basically an '06 case necked down to 7mm with the shoulder pushed forward a bit to prevent chambering in a .270.

I have three - a very rare Remington 725, a 742 semiauto and this 700 Custom Shop KS Mountain Rifle.

The 725 with its original B&L Balvar 5 scope.  Took my best ever whitetail with it.  Don't hunt much with it now after learning of its rarety.  This is what the 700 should have been.  Note three position safety.

7mm mag is VERY COMMON around these parts as is .243 win, 270 win, 30-30 and .30-06.

I am using a .264 win mag as a lot of hunting around here is from tree stands over open fields.

I've gotten a lot of deer with a 6mm Remington -- both Whitetails and Mule deer. Now I've got a custom built lightweight 257 Ackley Improved built on a Remington Model 7 action. a 22 inch Pac-nor barrel and Leupold Ultra light 3x9 scope. So far I've gotten 2 antelope with it -- one at 286 yards and one at over 500 yards. The 286 yards was lasered and the over 500 was paced off.
