Yes Li-Po Batteries and an aluminum frame would help

(and a camera that shoots in landscape mode)

I forgot to mention, 37 pounds total. It's significant, but perfectly manageable. Nam

I've long asked about antennas for this particular use.

This helps.

(after I stopped the bleeding from my eyes due to the vertical format.  Vertical format also makes the baby Jesus cry.  And VF is retarded.)

Lofl, I consider half that too much most of the time... The vast majority of my manpacks with the heavy NICD batts weigh in at 18-20lbs... When I go mountaintopping I might carry 15lbs of radio gear with me and if I'm backpacking half that...

Yeah, BTDT in my younger years, these days I will happily carry as little weight as I can.

What questions do you have? Verticals generally suck for this purpose.

Mostly the VHF/UHF part.

Whips work so/so for that.

My 897 rig I use a buddi whip at a measured length for VHF/UHF.

Nah...backpacks are for sissies... Gotta learn to be creative..

Nam, I'm just kidding. Nice setup you got there. Have you considered mounting the FT857 control head remotely? Maybe in a small pack on your chest?
I was in Europe earlier this year and spent some time operating a club station as OK/W3***. I had a guy call me from Arizona. He was running a pedestrian portable QRP station. He was actually walking down a street somewhere in Scottsdale. His radio was a FT817, running 5 watts into a vertical antenna attached to his backpack. I was amazed that I could hear him. He was 5 by 1 on the S-meter but I could hear him very well. This was amazing!
