I liked it, however as others said I was put off a bit by the constant gear nomenclature and brand dropping.

I thought the third book was kind of lousy.  Nothing but filler to drag on to the 4th book.  Where was the action, what was the story?  I was disappointed.

Finally got to finish reading number three, and I guess I'm the contrarian.  I really liked it.

I enjoy the characters the author has created, and I'm in no hurry for the story to end.  To me this book seemed kind of like a "day in the life of" episode in a series.  I'm quite happy with it, and look forward to reading the next one.

I see it kind of like comparing a two hour movie vs. an entire series.  If the series is of good quality, I'd pick it over just a movie any day.  I get to experience far more of the fictional world the author creates that way.  His books aren't super short, so I don't feel like I'm getting chiseled to pay per chapter.  He includes decent "meat" in his stories for what I'm paying IMHO.

Two thumbs up from me, and I can't wait for the next one to come out!

I am on Chapter15. I don't have a problem with it so far.

-As a preparedness family that just moved his household 125 miles (one way) I can tell you that I find the speed that they are moving Morgan and Dan's family over to the cabins seems a little far fetched. My last move 17 years ago was a company paid affair, so I can in no way compare the two. Compounding my situation is the fact that my preps have grown and my family size has doubled.
-Maybe I should start a thread on this as I feel that it could be an interesting conversation. Although my situation in this is a little unique there might be something for others to be learned in this.

I took it as they were just bugging out, not doing a full move.  I.E. they weren't taking their furniture, most appliances, kids toys, etc., etc., etc.   If you only took your camping type stuff and preps (with other folks helping load and unload it) I imagine it would expedite the process considerably.  By mutual agreement with Sarge, Morg and the gang also started prepping the bugout in advance of their actual departure.   The timing was rather convenient to their necessary movement, but it is a fictional story.  I'm also guessing the trailer was pretty big.

I finished Gome Home back around Christmas. I will continue the series. I really liked the first one, but I am glad I am not carrying his pack...geeze that thing must be heavy!

Call me odd, but I actually think it was neat to see a NON-military trained individual actually have a good head on his shoulders. Much more believeable than JWR Patriots "letter of introduction" crap about being trained by their buddy. I like how he threw in professional 'Military' and non-survivalist main characters.

As for the gear...I like to read...."he pulled out his Glock 19 and checked his three 15 round mags loaded with hollow points" much better than "he grabbed his 9mm pistol and clips".  A little detail doesn't hurt.....finding out the shipping weight, cost, tax percentage, recycleable shipping materials, sliver content, and hinge designs on a lunchbox is less than appealling; which he does often enough in the book.

I think it was a believeable book and put it at about 8 stars out of 10. We shall see what Surviving Home has for me.

I have read & enjoyed the first 3 books.
My brother knows the author & that
GHB is in his car everywhere he goes.
And it has all of the gear mentioned in the
book in it. I/you can tell that the author owns
the gear & knows how to use all of it.

I can't wait for the 4th book.

Later!

I just finished Surviving Home. Good sequal. It helps to have read the first one for some minor detail references, but I suppose it isn't required. Read this one much faster and easier than the first, but maybe that is just me.

Some of the stuff is kinda out there (gas available for trade at the gas station... after a few weeks that stuff would be gone to generators)......some of it is very believable (attacks on the home front). It is a much more....graphic....than the first. I hope that didn't spoil anything.....

Ready for Escaping Home....

I read Going Home after reading this thread.  It's by means a classic post apocalyptic novel.  That being said, it was readable.  Most of my complaints fall in line w/ what others have said.  For example, the main character has everything you could ever need in his back pack, including a grill.  Also, a lot of dialogue was extremely cliche.  Worst of all was how the main guy becomes John Rambo when the SHTF w/ no military training - you simply don't do much of what he did (especially fighting scenes) w/o experience.

I'd give it a 3/5.  I may download the sequel - it sounds better.

Picked up Going Home and Escaping Home at the gun show last weekend....ordered Surviving Home today online.

Have only read Going and will read the next 2 in order after my online order arrives.

Liked the book a lot....liked the characters and action.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I finished Going Home in a long night read a thon.  I couldn't put it down.  I have camped all over the Ocala National Forrest and recognized some of the places he has mentioned.
Also been on the Swanee River once, so the images in my head were vivid.

Looking forward to reading  Surviving Home.

I highly recommend this, it's a good read.

Finished it this morning. It was just as good as the first 3.

Sorta wished they focused more on the DHS camp mission vs. every detail of every meal, but it was still awesome.

Being found with a boat load of free time as of late, thanks to my former company and I parting ways,

I read all four in 5 or 6 days.  I think the door was left pretty wide open for another installment .

At least that what I tell myself.

Like what happens to the interrogator from the camp?

The other camps were being hit at the same time, they couldn't all be taken so easily right?

How about Orlando as a major population center that obviously turned into hell  on earth?

And are they just going to let the people out to roam around and mess things up?

How about going after the people who put the plans in place to start the whole event in the first place?

Like I said, I liked the books and would like to see more.

Where did you see that?  I was disappointed with the fourth book.

I did read on his site that he is in talks with a production company for a movie and they are going to raise money by crowd source funding like in the Lights Out thread.

When/If he gets book five...it would make for a pretty good TV series....each book for one season.
