Easily 20 buck's worth of vegetables there.

If you consider the prices of 'organic' and 'local grown' ... adds another 20 to their value if you had purchased them as a consumer.

I saw vegetable prices in the local grocer the other day.  I was shocked at them.

With the economy still struggling, prices up 20%, income per household down 5%, gasoline up 20% ... at some point the average consumer is simply going to be priced out of the fresh vegetable market.

Hamburger is well over 3.99 a pound.

I bought a brisket yesterday to grinf my own.  Still is 2.99 a pound for 'roll your own' brisket.

The property we are buying has a stock pond on it.  Might be fishing for our meat around here.

Hey Dimmu

Dumb question, I have planted reds, orange and yellow bells.  All look green.

Do they turn on the vine eventually or did I get all greens?

Thanks

I'm getting peppers but that's about it.  Something is up with the squash and zucchini this year.  Lots of female flowers but they never open up or get pollinated.  They all end up turning yellow and withering.  Spoke to another gardener and he is having the same problem this year.  Corn looks like shit.  I'll be surprised if I get any ears.  Green beans didn't get watered one day and are now all dead.  Tomatoes may as well be dead.  Anything that doesn't get watered in the morning shows signs of serious distress by noon.  Monsoons should be starting in the next couple days so hopefully the extra humidity will help the garden.

Edit:  Here's today's harvest.

My main pepper crops are jalapenos (mammoth and Craigs grande), anaheims, bananas, tequila sunrise, ethnic sweet anthoi Romanian (an experiment that earned a permanent place in my garden this year) and lunch box snacking peppers.  I also planted a bed of various sweet peppers trying to find a bell or other sweet variety that does well here.  So far the gourmet bells and golden California wonders will be getting replanted next year.  The tequila sunrise and lunchbox peppers seem to be a flop for me.  With our heat they don't get big enough to be worthwhile.  Unless they show improvement this fall when things cool down I won't be replanting them next year.  The Romanians peppers are good bell substitutes (although smaller).  They get really sweet when ripe and are pretty prolific even with extreme heat.  I also tried mini bells this year but their fruit is also too small to be worthwhile.  I expect the fall crop will produce larger fruit but at this point I think I'll just plant full size bells.

I can't seem to wrap my nose around that being a good idea.  Basil smells like a plastic fishing worm.  Try it sometime.  Smell both at the same time.   I could see 'mint pepper jelly', or even garlic ... but basil?  Just seems .. weird.

You do a very good job of putting some very attractive canned good on the counter.  I have not canned anything myself this year.  Pantry still over filled.

FWIW, corn is a grass.  It's a heavy nitrogen user.  Each stalk is actually a single blade of grass.

Grass needs nitrogen. sunlight. water.

It's a 90 day crop.   You need to have very well fertilized, nitrogen filled, soil with 1" of water per square foot per week.  Corn has roots that can go 12 feet deep.  The 1" of water is rainfall ... in ADDITION to the deeper water needed.  This is why you see corn in alluvial river bottoms with shallow water tables.

About halfway, six weeks, (knee high-ish) you will need to put a 30-0-0 nitrogen fertilizer on the crop.  This gives it the boost it needs to grow the heavy, thick, dark green leaves required to feed the 12-18" ears.

The leaves are the sugar factories.  Without broad, deep, dark leaves, fueled by nitrogen, you will get short, stubby, 4-8" ears.

My native soil does not meet the basic needs for corn.  I have grown it successfully, but, with the ongoing drought, lack of deep nitrogen and deep water (clay stratus) I have stopped trying to tilt windmills for corn.

Weird it must be the variety. I just went out and smelled both, not smelling a similarity. We grow sweet basil.
The jelly was an experiment last year and only made three jars. We opened one up last winter and was shocked at how good
it is. This stuff is also pretty versatile. It works on biscuits, chicken and probably a mess of other things. Sweet or savory.

Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks. I'm going to make sure I do it right next year.
That was the last harvest this season for the corn. I really think it would have done better if I had fertilized at knee high.
Still a better harvest than last year.

This gives it the boost it needs to grow the heavy, thick, dark green leaves required to feed the 12-18" ears.

good stuff.  i hit mine with 20-10-10 as it was all I had when it was a little less than waist high.  It jumped.  Hopefully it will produce.  Last year was an utter failure.

20-10-10 is better than nothing, corn just doesn't need the 10-10 parts.  Now, if you were growing beans and squash alongside, then that 10-10 would have been helpful to those plants.

I always have a problem with okra getting really woody when picking the pods after like 4-5 inches. Do you notice that? and if so, what do you do with the pods?

This variety I had zero issues with, even at 11 inches long. Shocked would be an understatement.
I planted Ferry~Morse Clemson Spineless #80. The plants are six feet tall right now and showing no signs of slowing down yet.

Well we have some bad weather on it's way so we harvested this evening.
Cantaloupe 2lbs 14oz
Okra 4oz
Juliets 1lb
Big boys 1lb 1oz
San Marzanos 2lbs
Romas 8oz
Atkinsons 1lb 5oz
Habaneros 3oz
and we found one last 7oz ear of corn when we cut the stand down.

We already threw the juliets in the bowl before the pic.
