Everywhere I've been lately that carries Lodge, the selection is limited to basic items. A few Dutch ovens and the normal selection of frying pans.

Really big new cast iron is going to be Chinese. Carolina Cooker carried by Agri Supply makes some really big cast iron. But again, made in China.  The good news, at least for their frying pans, is that they season up pretty well.

Well, I wasn't able to make a full sized hand tossed pizza but I did discover that some of the store bought crusts happen to be 12-inches...

Glad a fellow camper showed me this last week!  They had made homemade crust too but honestly this was far easier and when you are out hiking all day who wants to deal with a complicated meal!

At the price the Lodge Dutch ovens go for, I would look for a decent quality Chinese one.

A quick Google search for 16" Dutch oven yields a surprising number of results.  I suspect shipping wouldn't be cheap, but it looks like there are some reasonable options.

This one is $87...for real. And free shipping. So it might not be seasoned from the factory as well as a lodge. But no way I would pay nearly $500 for a little better quality.

16" Dutch Oven for $87

Here's a bigger one...

18" for under $100

I have not heard of the Camp Chef Grizzly!  Then I found this one King Kooker I never heard of it either!
I did not know there was so many company's making cast iron! King Kooker has for 31 years.
Well looking around found that Walmart carry's them on line: Walmart King Kooker
It is a 20qt for about $85.00. And at my Walmart it has free deliver to my store!
All of my dutch ovens where bought used! Or given to me!
But waiting around trying to fine used one at a good price will take time!
Also I do not have a CampChef Grizzly or aKing Kooker!!! So I do not know how good they are!
I'm sure you can fine something about then on the web! Good or bad!!!
Love the pictures!! Look like you guys where having fun!!!
Let the hive know what happen with your search for a larger dutch oven!!!

Another thread had a link to Mills farm and fleet for a hatchet.   I was surfing around and they still had 1 quart DCO.   I didn't care for the prices on them though.

I have a 10" Deep, 12" Standard, and 12" Deep Camp Dutch Ovens.  I couldn't imagine juggling the weight of that 16" hot oven upside down.
I've never thought of doing pizza with them.  Something new to try, thanks.

Not Lodge and not china-made, and go almost as big as you want:

South African made, sizes go all the way up to 59 1/2 quarts i.e. 121 lbs!

https://www.lehmans.com/product/3-legged-cast-iron-kettles/cast-iron

There used to be one other dutch oven maker in UT, but I think they went out of business years ago (or got out of the dutch oven business).

I realized after I posted that I had posted in the Cooking forum and really this should be here...

I have not bought any Cast Iron in a few years but the other week I was camping and we visited a neighbor camper and they made me envious of their monster 16-inch camp fire dutch oven. Not that I need to serve 30+ people but what they had made was a Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza in theirs and the pizza looked and smelled so great I decided I would look for a larger dutch oven when I got home. I currently have a 12-inch Lodge camp fire stove and use it along with my various skillets, etc.

What I discovered however is that Lodge has discontinued the 16-inch Dutch ovens a couple years ago (2013 from what I could find) and now even the 14-inch ovens look like they are being discontinued. I see there is one 16-inch Lodge on Flee Bay for $260 and climbing and a second with an over $460 buy it now price YIKES! I would prefer an USA Made Dutch oven if possible but I can get a 16-inch Camp Chef unit made in China for about $90.

I decided to grab one of the remaining 14-inch 10-Quart Lodge units I could find for sale! I figure it will work for making Pizza just fine and if I ever want to cook a larger item or for lots of people I will have this for the rest of my life. I certainly wish I had bought a 16-inch a few years ago as I remember them costing about $110 or so new and at the time I thought that they were too big and expensive and I would never use it. Getting the 14-inch cost me $137 as is.

As I posted earlier, Bass Pro shop still had the 14-inch Deep ovens in stock last weekend (I was shocked).  Shipping on these sucks however so it is always best if you get lucky enough to find one locally.  The 16-inch or the non-Deep 14-inch will likely take a lot more effort to find.  I saw one of the smaller 14-inch ones and the seller wanted $200 for it.  I don't need it that bad!

I think you are referring to MACA.  If so, they were in Utah and then moved production to India.  They were very high quality even when made in India and they had some huge dutch ovens - large enough you could could two full sized turkeys in one!  I have seen a couple of them for sale but they are very expensive ($400+) when you find them.  MACA stopped making cast iron cookware a few years ago as well, even from India.

My Father has an old Kettle like these that has been sitting there for probably 40-years.  I should ask him if he will ever do anything with it and try to restore it.  I don't think it has a lid but it has to be 14-16-inches at the lid.  Still too big unless I had a larger outing.  My scout den is only 7-kids and even with parents the real big stuff is too big for most meals.

That was it!  Never paid them much attention or mind - why should I?  I live about 100 miles from the frigging Lodge factory and it's main store!  Of course, hindsight is always 20/20 and I'm stuck with, at best, my Lodge Boy Scout Camping dutch oven.  Which has served me well over the years.

Is it OK to boil inside of a typical Dutch Oven or are they more intended for baking and frying? I've heard that boiling water will strip off the surface. If that is true, is it OK to make soup in a Lodge Dutch Oven without any side effects? I would like something more oriented toward soups.

Thanks

This thread makes me sad.

I picked up a Lodge 10" 4 quart camp dutch oven a few weeks ago and haven't used it yet.  I have a 12" Chinese DO that has seen occasional use on campouts.

I would love to pick up an 8" and a 14" (and eventually replace the 12" with a Lodge).

If you look around you might find a whole stove for what you will pay for the grate.  As I posted earlier in this thread, my local Wal-Mart had these on clearance a month or so ago.  Otherwise, I would just contact Lodge as I bet they would sell you the part you need.

Parts list can be seen here:

One of the many things I learned at Dutch Commando School is that this is a Dutch Oven.

This is a pot.

Many years ago, our oldest told me that his Boy Scout Troop didn't do anything resembling Fieldcraft.  So the next camping trip was with Dad's and I went with them.  We build a poncho lean-to with room for an oven when we got there.  That night it absolutely poured.  Everyone including the Scout Masters abandoned ship to their vehicles.  We were perfectly warm and dry.  In the morning it was still raining, we had bacon and eggs while everyone else ate granola bars in their cars.  The trip was cancelled because it was raining.

I was actually admonished by the Scout Masters for making them look bad.  Our son never went back.

My scout handbooks calls that a "Dakota fire hole/pit"
They are very useful, but you need the right kind of soil for them to hold together.

It seems people like the Cabelas brand as an alternative to Lodge?  What sizes do you recommend based on group size.  My trips consist of 1-2 or 5-6 people, and only very rarely in-between.  What sizes would you recommend for those two groups?

I would start with the 12-inch 6-quart lodge oven.  It is the most versatile of the dutch ovens and most recipes are for the 12-inch.  After this, the 10-inch would be my next purchase for sides or smaller dishes as you can still buy the lodge 10-inch at normal retail prices.  The 8-inch lodge would be my preference over the 10-inch but Lodge discontinued these for now so they prices on them are often unreasonable for what they are.

Once you have the12 and 10-inch, my next most used oven is a Cabelas 16-inch Deluxe Oven.  We use it for Pizza as well as cooking big whole chickens or small turkeys!  These three ovens combined with their lids that you can use as griddles would cover darn near everything you describe (assuming you add some skillets).

I would disagree somewhat

I have a 10 and a 12.

I find myself wishing the 12 was a 10, more than I wish the the 10 was a 12.

For me, the 16 would be waay too big unless cooking something really big.

I just got back from a weekend trip with 7 adults. (4 guys, 3 girls)

10"

12"

Lodge Sportsman grill

Lodge Reversible Griddle/Grill

Used the Griddle on top of the Grill, which worked really well.

We had:

Shrimp and grits

Shepherd's pie

Peach cobbler

Biscuits

Bacon

Eggs

Cinnamon rolls

All done on the above.

The entrees in the 12" were perfect for that size group.  Always had about one serving left over.

Not saying don't get a 16, but it is much more of a specialty item IMO that the 10 and 12.
