LOL, Honestly my strategy is simply keep a small stocked bar, let my friends know what is my favorite booze, and they buy it for me as birthday, Christmas, gifts.
If you don't drink except socially, it will blow your mind how much you have in no time at all. As I type this I have two 5ths of Rare Breed in the wood display cases with classes, two 5ths of Rare breed in bottles, one bottle of Four Roses small batch, a bottle of Wild Turkey 101. six little shot size Rare Breeds, and that's in my office not even in my bar.
Its quite ironic. Nobody gives anyone beer but you let folks know you like this liqueur, which is way more expensive than beer, you end up with a lifetimes supply in gifts. People enjoy giving it to folks they know aren't alcoholics and have on intention of being one. If you are a drunk, nobody gives you crap and you have to hang with other drunks to share theirs.
The stuff you don't drink, well its always there. When I get about a half bottle down, I replace it We have a little wine rack for those special night dinner wines and when it needs some holes filled, we stock up on liquer that's half empty. Honestly sometimes I forget, and buy more anyway. Before long the cabinets under your bar at home are like one at a real bar. Now I have a full bar in the Den and a mini-bar in the sunroom.
It looks nice, decorative, and a conversation piece when you have company.
The real issue isn't what to stock or how but if you drink all the time, you can't stock anything except what you don't like. When you are buying only crap you wouldn't normally drink because its cheap, time for the 12 steps man. I had my run in with the "Budweiser God" when I was a kid so its not hard at all.
The "Budweiser God" is what my social circle calls alcoholics who will forsake God, Country, Family, and Job for alcohol. Where Catholics make the sign of the cross, we when talking about others, make the sign of the bottle. To keep a bar, I kid you not, sometimes you need to hide it from those who worship the "Budweiser God". If you do worship the "Budweiser God" don't bother to stock anything. You won't. Like a coke addict trying to become a dealer, you will become your own best customer.
Anyway, having nice booze around is a plus. A bottle of booze as a well chosen gift has opened more doors than keys. Historically it has more value in survival than gold. Luxury items are always a hot item during hard times of any sort. Where a gift of money is always seen as a bribe, a nice bottle of booze is not. I hate to say this but many people do worship the "Budweiser God" and you can always count on them to be appreciative and sometimes walk on water or navigate the gates of hell for it. I've got more done in the Army and business with one well placed bottle than years of pleading.
That reminds me, I owe my doctor a bottle of Four Roses small batch for Christmas. I'll just give hm this one in front of me.
As for the morality of drinking, unless its a religious thing or you are a recovering alcoholic, there is no more in a shot of good booze than eating sugar or salt. Its like many things a matter of how much and how often, while a little of it is actually very healthful and a major social door opener. It is an acquired taste much like eating Indian food is the first time. After a while though, you develop a taste for what you like and refine that taste. Its not a one size fits all, discourage everyone, discourage everyone. If my "Budweiser God" friends knew how many times I've used booze they dare not even buy as an antiseptic or to start a fire on a cold day, they'd have a heart attack. Alcohol only has the value, you put in it.
Tj
BTW, I'm grinning ear to ear at rather trade bullet than booze that prevails this forum. I'd rather have my neighbor drunk and dependent than shooting at me.
