Guess I've got some reading to do to figure this one out Ok, one problem down and another one popped up. I found out that the main panel AFCI breakers tripping is not a big deal. Seems like they all do it when a generator is connected through a transfer switch. (Think it has to do with the neutral bonded to ground in the main panel AND on the gen). But the transfer switch panel breaker is what is protecting the circuit when on gen power, so just need to reset the main panel breaker when the power comes back on. Second test I found that the voltage up in my comm room was low when on the generator - UPS kept kicking in and it was only showing a reading of around 95 volts. I'm wondering if all the wiring (I've got the gen running in the back yard, connected to 100ft of extension cords, going to the transfer switch and then through the house) is too much and I'm losing voltage that way. But got to figure this out, 95 volts is just too low and I really want to use the little UPS. |

Run line directly from generator to upstairs through window - and use a heavier extension cable. 30Amp cables are available in the RV section @ WallyWorld, along w/ converters - but you might as well buy a 2nd generator for that price & toss it on the roof. |

View Quote Your house wiring should be easily capable of handling this little generator's 800 watts without introducing any significant voltage drop. However, the extension cords might be another matter. Also, if your house is drawing well above 800 watts, the generator's output voltage will sag. Best strategy is to measure voltage right at the generator (with hour house connected to it), and also at the end of your extension cords. |

No other camp within 2 miles, It was muzzle loading season. No, it wasn't shot (I do shoot a .58 cal. though) I was thinking something inside let go, cut fuel lines and BOOM!. We were in camp eating lunch, you cant hear it run 200 yards out in any case. I didn't and cant take it apart to autopsy, its been returned. The employees at HF said they had never seen anything like that, they looked surprised and didn't want to even touch it. All the other guys checking out looked at it like WTF? Since no one else has ever had this happen I'm going to say I got the lemon and just move on.

I would bet that was happening to you but dripping down into the generator end case. That is why it has the hole in it. |

Got it squared away. Do these produce decent enough sine waves to power most battery chargers?

Thank you. I always read "do not use a cheap generator on sensitive electronics." I have a Minnkota two bank charger for my boat, but am unsure is that qualifies as a sensitive electronic. The manual states to only use generators that produce a sine wave output.

Harbor freight has these on sale again for $88.88 with the online coupon. I picked one up to see what everyone was talking about and to have a back up to my other generator. I was skeptical of the quality at first. After I got it home I changed out the spark plug like everyone recommended. Put in some old two cycle fuel I had left over from the weed eater. This little thing fired right up and ran like a champ. Nice little generator for the price.

Anti-archive bump with a question.
How noisy is this generator? I want to use it with my HAM radios. Batteries are nice but do not last very long when not doing QRP, unless we have those large car-size ones. So, I'm planning to get a little one just for the radios and lights. So, less than 250W. Even thought about building one using an RC engine but the price would end-up about the same or more than this HF model. Just found this thread and going through it. Watched a couple videos but they were not very conclusive. I saw a similar capacity Generac for around $350. The Honda Eco is my fold standard but $750 is too much. |

Electrical or airborne?

Decided to buy it today. $88 was quite tempting so I decided to bite.
A lot more silent than I was expecting. I have a 9000W gen that tells the whole block around my house when I'm running it. Could barely hear this one when I put it at the end of my backyard. Not even close to a Honda Eco that we barely hear beside us, but net bad at all for a bit more than 10% of its price. Started on the third pull. Let it run for 30 min or so and fired a few stuff like the shop-vac and lights. Working fine. Next test will be with a 12VDC power source and my radios. |

found out it turns off like a regular bolt.
If anyone ever need to take generator and motor apart. Take a socket that will fit over bolt and will clear bolt head and washer and still be on the race of bearing. Hit it a couple time to take some pressure off bolt head. |
