Hey loon.  Good to see ya!

Any cider in the works this year?

None made yet, but hopefully soon.  I have canned up a few dozen quarts of applesauce, and my next apples will be for pressing.  I actually leant my press out to friends, so thanks for the reminder, I need that back shortly.

Start with 2010.

All is explained.

Have fun.  It's harder than you would think.

Gala apple, my grandpa's old KBar folder

Off of apple:

Cut into 10" pieces and measured.  Total of 151 1/4 inches.

Will have to dig back into past attempts to see how it stacks against other years.

I always look forward to this fish, thanks for a fun time.  I'll try to get some cider pressing pictures up soon!

Great contest and memorial OP!  I think I missed last year, but gave it another go this time.  Not a winner this year, but did better than my previous attempt.

We tend to buy small apples.  Great for the kids to eat, but not so great for a peeling contest.

This year I tried the smallest, sharpest blade I had in the box o' pocketknives.

Y'all have hands of steel and more patience than I do  Managed to get almost to the end before cutting through the peel, but I still wasted some.

Breaking up to measure, accounting for the curves...I'll call it around 52"

I mentioned this thread to my father the other day and decided to peel one since there was an apple nearby.
Average size Red Delicious, kept it as one strand, just to show him I could.  Around 55'' or so.

Eta. OK, had to use my tablet to take a photo, now I can't figure out how to link it from photo bucket... lol

Not sure what variety I had, I suspect it was a golden delicious. Knife is a Escanaba Blackjack Model 124.
Somewhere around 32 inches on a folding rule that belonged to my grandfather.

Please don't buy me a membership, you've been way too generous in this and the years past. It's not that I don't appreciate it, I do immensely.

Thanks fish!!

I look forward to this every year, and my son as well, so it's not just you!

I've got 5 or more bushels of apples piled up in the woodshed waiting for a day off, then cider!

Sorry fish, work conspired against me this year.
I did spend Sunday with the family and extended family at the orchard picking apples and enjoying the day. Peeled several apples for the younger crowd and thought of your gramps.
