Any competent detectorist can notch out steel/iron and still get good signals on non ferrous metals... so if you're burying steel stuff, you're likely ok there (even then, bb's won't sound the same as a larger piece of steel...) but if you're burying aluminum or brass... not so much.

Minelabs, Garret, etc. Your high end dual frequency detectors with high end loops WILL pass out the trash and reflect a good signal. What we are missing is depth. A minelab with a narrow loop can hit 2-3 feet deep with a good/experienced operator. Ever watch the old guy with headphones constantly raising and lowering his loop? He is "ground balancing" for a better signal. I might really look deep if I suspect someone is trying to put me off a scent. I did a lot of deep underwater detecting years ago, you balance every few feet of sweep if you want to find something.

Deep is better than peppering. Someone earlier mentioned the pros who play hide and seek for a living, a peppered site will alert them. Depends a lot on your situation. If you think your safe from being singled out, then a casual pepper might work/
