My bug out place was my folk's old ranch in the Sierras. It burned to the ground in September last year during the King Fire.

I have 5 acres just outside of Portland. I am not there but family who are there say conditions are still brutal. There is no threat to our place at this time. I guess the smoke is everywhere though. |

Not near the fires; however, I took a youngster camping & canoeing at Big Lake Tuesday & Wed. The smoke was pretty bad. As evening came on we couldn't see Mt. Washington because of the smoke/haze.
Edit: No camp fires, so we had a "cold" camp. It was HOT! The dust must have been 4-6" deep where we pitched the tent. |

Brother and Parents have properties 11 miles from the Stouts Creek fire. Luckily it decided to head SouthEast and not West. They have bad smoke on occasion.

Just came back from a weekend of camping about 2 miles from the fires near Chelan. Pretty thick smoke coming off the hills, but it thinned out near Wenatchee State Park, could still smell it quite a bit. Lake Chelan was shut down as they are using it for heli's and planes to fight fires. State Parks are calling everyone with reservations and giving them refunds. Firefighters that have redcards and that can afford to leave their community are being sent in to help too.

We have an 8000 acre fire 7 miles east of where I live and is only 5% contained. Smoke is thick throughout the county (woke up to ash on the vehicles this morning) and winds are expected to gust at 30mph later today. We are safe but there are residents threatened, especially if the wind kicks up like predicted and more lightning storms are forecast for tomorrow. Washington State is a mess right now with fires and resources are limited, especially air attack.
Yesterday was a sad day as we lost 3 firefighters in one of the fires located in the north central part of the state. The way conditions are it is going to get even worse I fear. |

It's a mess right now and I don't even live in one of the worst areas. I See choppers making water dump runs everyday almost. It's so damn dry in my area I'm just waiting for it to go up. The other day a guy towing a trailer started a brush fire on the freeway. (trailer chain dragging sparked brush fires) my house is a ways off the highway but backs up to a green space that connects to the highway. Drove home to see smoke and firecrews at my exit.
Prayers out to the lost firefighters this week. And to anyone up here dealing with this in your community. |

FerFAL Respirators really aren't needed unless you're in direct contact with, or immediately near the smoke source and in heavy, dense smoke. Or in a confined area. Areas with dense smoke can be very irritating, and adversely affect those with respiratory problems. If you're using a respirator you're way too close to a fire. Plus they're very hard to breath with when wearing them due to restricted air flow. However, structure fires are a different animal and air source breathing devices are common. I fought forest fires from the late 70's to early 2000's and have been around a lot of fires. I never saw any one on the "line" wearing a respirator on a forest fire. |

This has been quite an anomaly year for drought throughout the Pacific NW, and the tragic loss of the three firefighters saddens me greatly. My first job out of high school was on a forest fire crew, so when it is tinder dry like this, my instincts go strongly toward wariness.
My home is located closer to the ocean, so things are not quite as bad as east of the Cascade mountain crest. |

Yep, burning pretty much all around us and the air is crazy bad as in my throat is on fire bad. The Bayview fire was just a few miles north of here in which the town was evacuated but they got it under control. I grew up in the Kamiah/Kooskia area which has a 60,000+acre fire and there were several towns that were evacuated, about 125 building lost so far (40 homes) and one person died. There are literally so many fires they aren't even fighting some of them. We are supposed to get thunderstorms and high winds tonight so yippee!!

I have had a headache, plugged sinus, and burning eyes for almost a week now. Air quality so bad they are saying no strenuous activity outside. I can't believe people complain about the odd power plant around here when it would take a hundred years of pollution from one of those to match this forest fire burning for a week.

We ate at Lolo Steak House and it was just open after fires to the west. The waitress said the field across the street was used as a camp or staging area. We rode 12 towards Idaho the next day and they were still putting out hot spots. It was a beautiful ride but left me with a healthy respect for wild fires. |

The visible part of smoke is really particulate matter. In those cases a N95 particulate mask helps filter particulate matter out.
Some label these masks as "respirators" but real respirators are really full or half-mask apparatus using replaceable filters, and worn over the mouth and nose or the entire face to prevent the inhalation of dust, smoke, or other noxious substances. An "air respirator" has a powered or supplied independent air supply, like the air bottles seen being used by structure fire fire fighters. |

I'm in the Dalles and the smoke has been blown out the last two days with the west wind. I was on top of tygh ridge yesterday and the fire on Mt. Adams looked pretty bad judging by the smoke.
A construction crew started a fire by accident were we were working yesterday. We had to protect our fence and they shut down the road, glad I got out of there before it started. |

I am in stevens county and it's pretty bad. The smoke is amazing. I am a volly and was at the marble fire last friday night and it's a wonder more homes didn't burn considering how fast it was moving. My district has two units and four men out of our 20 active members state mobilized We are hoping for no more wind and lightning..we've had enough..

We got a break in the northern Bitterroot Valley when the cold front came thru late yesterday. Was able to open the windows up for fresh air, and go for a bike ride, but the fire hazy rolled back in mid-afternoon from south and west. Not as bad as the last two days but its supposed to get into the low 90's thru mid next week.

Times like these, of course first and foremost is pray for rain, those affected, and safety of those on the fire line. Have also been reminded of the selfish attitudes of the urban voting populations that locked up much of our forest land in the name of environmental protection so that we could no longer practice active forest management. This is one of the results, instead of jobs in the timber industry, we have devastation.

I am in Eugene, Oregon and the smoke was aweful this weekend. We are in a valley and the winds changed filling the valley with smoke. Visibility was less than a mile.

However, a change in the current warm and dry weather to a fall pattern will end this fire season. It's just a question on when it happens. The days are getting shorter so we're heading that way. FerFAL, How S. American rainforests are managed, or not managed, is not the same as N. American temperate forests. |

I am very surprised we are not seeing more of this on the news. This is affecting a huge area, and a significant amount of people...

Or how about the three simultaneous cat 4 hurricanes in the pacific? http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/three-category-4-hurricanes-pacific-kilo-ignacio-jimena I know a lot of focus is on the market and economy but don't take your eye of the weather... Economy + weather + global tensions mixed up into a soup bowl for a "prefect storm?"

Our cabin is less than four miles from the updated fire line of the Carpenter Road burn. Went up there a ten days ago to secure the place and grab a load of firewood. It was 15 miles away at that time. Really hoping the place is still there by the end of the weekend.

Since Sunday cold fronts and rain have helped tampen down the fire situation, and improved air quality here in western MT. Decent rain today & feels like fall. This weather should go through the weekend and should help things in northern Idaho and western MT.

Sub 90 degrees here in upstateNY which is unusually high for this time of year. So much for the term "weather pattern." The pattern seems to be getting more extreme as years go on. If we don't see some rain here we will be looking at some small wild fires as well, though I think we would need at least another week or two of dry hot temps for it to be any real issue. I was on top of Sweitzer Mountain this weekend and got snowed on. It didn't stick but its definitely Fall in the North West
