Add iBooks ( a free app) to your iPhone.

You can email yourself .PDFs, and then open them with iBooks, and store them on your phone.

I just added a .PDF to my phone, of a webpage that detailed how to jumper the ALDL (aka OBD I) plug on my '94 Suburban, and it has a numerical chart of the diagnostic trouble codes.

No, because this is a ballistics app, which has a huge library of ammo specs.  This app allows you to use your current location, elevation, wind, etc., and gives you the POI for nearly all situations (including if your target is moving, and at what speed).

It's a ballistics app, more than a mil-dot app.

If you run nike gps is nice. Ive got Knights BulletFlight for ballistic software, works very nice and has coeficients for most aftermarket bullets (Sierra, Speer, Hornaday and Nosler to name a few.) Ive got one called GPS kit for navigation that works OK.

Food Storage is pretty handy, scans the barcodes and has suggested stocking levels as you enter data.  I think someone posted it here.

Perhaps we should have a tacked thread (or a link from one of the tacked threads) to 'survival/preparedness' oriented apps for iPhone, Android, Windows, and RIM (Blackberry) ?

Perhaps lists by functionality?
Communications? (e-mail, texting, HAM related, translators, pdanet)
Intelligence (i.e. news, weather)
Shooting (mil-dot, ballistics, reloading database, shot timer)
Navigation (GPS, Maps, Distance measuring, star maps, orienteering)
Survival (Army Survival guide, knots, etc)
Moral (music, movies, games, document readers, book readers)
Other (ODD2 readers, flashlight, and other useful apps that don't fit in a predefined catagory)

The list should also note which apps require a constant data connection to use (like Google Maps or Google Navigator) and those that can 'stand alone' like Backcountry Navigator.  It should also note the cost, and if any extra hardware is required (like a blue-tooth OBD reader).

Maybe get on of the mods on this?

Other current (non archived) threads on the subject that could also be linked to:
Survival Apps

Favorite Apps

New Smart phone - what are good apps? (more Droid oriented)

A tacked thread would be nice.

SoundHound.
My son and I were commenting the other day that it was one of our favorite apps.  There's a free one but I think you can only use it 5 times a month.  We went ahead and bit the bullet and bought the $4.99 version because we use it so much.

I used to think like that.  "Buncha pansies! etc." Then I got an iTouch and used the hell out of it at wifi spots and elsewhere.

Then I got my employer to take the contract if I paid for the phone up front in return for actually answering the phone on weekends for emergency IT stuff. (There's two other guys who's job it is to that, so I am the backup.)

Now I feel naked without it.

Anyway,

I use:

the Camera

ShuBook Reader

WeatherBug

myLite (lights the flash, the face, flash messages, etc.)

Waze (a crowd sourcing traffic app)

Google Earth

NearMe service to find stuff

and a bunch of conversions and recipe apps.

Zombie Gunship

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombie-gunship/id435797419?mt=8

Rack up cash then upgrade weapons, do not increase the damage radius of your weapons when available, you can't take out zombies without getting civilians too.

Does it work with no cell signal available? It doesn't say on their website.

ETA: Nevermind, it does. As long as you download the relevant maps ahead of time it will work.

What about this, get ibooks app, go to link and download all books that you feel necessary, add to itunes then sync to phone. Combined with lots of other apps that have been suggested, a griffin defender and maybe a goal zero solar charger, you have one sweet SHTF electronic.
Thats my plan

also maybe pocket cpr

A friend of mine uses iWork and likes it... Here is a recent comparison of a few of the leading brands, also I read MS has been working on a iPad Office app last fall.

Life case. The phone does you no good if it gets wet or gets cracked. Life case display at best buy features a powered up iPhone sitting in an aquarium for 12 hours a day. Expensive but there is nothing better.

Do these aps work for android phones, too, or do you need an Apple phone? My current phone is a plain old flip phone and I have no experience with smart phones. I've been thinking about getting an android phone from Virgin Mobile (pay as you go plan : $35/month no contract). My current plan is a mere $20/ every 3 months, so it'd be an increase in expenses but some of these aps sound pretty useful.

How good does the GPS work on these? I mean if you're out in the boonies somewhere.
