I've had a canteen sitting in storage with the lid on for about 10 years.  Its still a really nice canteen & very functional, but I'd like to give it a really good cleaning again before I use it to de-odorize it a little.

Whats the best/safest thing to use?  white vinegar?

I plan on picking up a nalgene bottle this weekend, but I still want to get the canteen up & running.

Thanks

Come on, its got to be salvagable?  It doesnt really smell at all... I just wanted to give it a nice cleaning before use again.  Nalgene technology is just so cool.

I would use a bleach and water mixture as listed here under the heading Water storage
containers (Examples: used cans or bottles)

The quantities of bleach to water in the link above are gtg.

The standard in the industry is 50 -100 ppm. bleach to water.

Use room temperature water, anything over 170 degrees degrades the ability of the bleach to sanitize.

You didn't indicate what the canteen is made of?  Aluminum?  Steel?  Plastic?   What odor?

Vinegar, Bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide are all good cleaners. Hot water is also very good.  Concentration and soak duration would  be dependent on material.

If it is plastic and that old, you might want to ditch as it will leach.

This is what I have done when I need to clean them out. We did this when our canteens were issued at Parris Island and none of us got sick or complained of bad tasting water (except that damn EWater shit- during the Crucible)

Bleach followed by a few rinses then let the baking soda mix sit in there for awhile.

I'm going to suggest a screen name change here. "Johnny Science", and you can't figure out how to sterilize a canteen?

Water and bleach. That's all you need.

I would never, ever, ever drink from a used canteen unless I had no other choice.

I bought a camelbak for this reason. I never pissed in my canteen (I was not a blue falcon)...

But I knew some who did.

Saw one at Academy the other day. It was a 1qt. and blue. Probably not milspec, but looked the same size and shape.

Not sure if this would work with a plastic canteen but on my Thermoses I use the fizzy denture cleaning tabs in the hottest water that will come out of my tap. Does the trick every time.

Cheaper.  I don't care if it's not green or brown.  Gray is just as good, and they make replacement black caps for $3.00 from nalgene instead of the blue.
