I just finished my Coffee Bum toco press (was using book type press previously). What are you all using to build your blocking to set your spacing for the chicago tension? Would cardboard work or do you have to use hardboard/masonite, or other?

Does anybody know the best way to mold a M&P Shield with a Lasermax Centerfire.
I don't want to press the laser, but my attempts to block it have failed. I tried hardened molding clay on the prop gun, but blew it apart in the press. I have asked lasermax if I could buy just the shell, but haven't heard back yet. I tried carving one from wood, but can't find it after all that work. That might have actually worked. |

The Kydex cools quick enough that the heat won't damage it, and the thickness of the gun will prevent the laser from being pressed too tightly. I'd recommend removing the battery, and putting a small block over the button so it isn't activated while holstered. |

I'd recommend removing the battery, and putting a small block over the button so it isn't activated while holstered. I constricted the lower front of an M&P Shield by pressing it. The heat made the Shield's Lower semi-circle of plastic bend in causing friction when the slide moves back. ( the front bottom of the slide that holds the Spring was rubbing against the lower because the lower was reshaped when I pressed it. I was able to fix it with heat and stretching it back out, but I no longer press real guns and that goes for the laser too. |

Sounds like your heat and/or pressure was too high. Kydex only needs to be 300-315 and pre--heat your foam and mold product to 180-200. I've never had an issue other than magwells becoming tight. Fix that by inserting a full mag or leaving the grip out of the press. The press itself doesn't need to be so tight the carbon deposits turn to diamons, maybe 250-300lbs tight with good foam will give good definition. That's no different than a large American gentleman sitting on the gun in his pickup truck.

That looks almost identical to how I make my holsters. I see in the second pic down at the body bend the separation of the two halves. A huge annoyance of mine. I've found that it comes from finishing your edges and then doing the bend. This method only works if you get the to-be-bent area really hot and pliable and go slooooooow. If you just get it somewhat pliable and force it, it will separate because one piece of kydex is hotter than the other and the cooler one doesnt want to bend with the other at the same rate. I've found that doing just a sisal wheel blend to knock down the sanded edges and a "pre-finish" type edge, then do the body bend, watching out for the separation, pinch that area while hot to seal the edge, then go back to sisal, yellow cloth with black compound, denim wheel, soft cotton wheel. |

I didn't tape mine up but the stipple job was on the part of the holster that I cut off. But no effect on my guns and one of them has been pressed maybe 12 or so times. |

They're as expensive as real magazines. Does the forming process ruin real magazines and that's why these are recommended? If you press a real mag, I would definetly load it with rounds. It needs structure or it will collapse ever so slightly. Snap caps, ehh, unless they are the solid aluminum ones, you'll also need to buy a ton of them, which are about 4x more than real rounds. If anyone doesn't think real rounds are "safe" blah blah, do what you think is safe. I've never had a problem. ANYWAY... You can get double mag drones and singles. If you get two singles, you can tape them with a block and make a double. If you get the double drone, you can only do doubles without significant work to make it a single. The Blue Gun brand mag drones DO NOT have a "bullet" on top as the Multimold brand does. It does make a difference in the final product. I did not know this so I took a dremel and ground away a bit of the "follower" in the blue gun mag and put a dummy round in place. Works perfectly actually. (dummy round is a de-primed piece of brass with a bullet I made on my reloading press.) For rifle mags, I would get the dummy for sure. The pressure would not be good on a Pmag and a USGI aluminum AR mag. Plus they come pre-blocked. |
