My father gifted me his 90s era Clearwater setup, he has not used it in years and it is in like new condition, hard tube and canvas wrap for the rod and a neoprene pouch for the reel.

Is is decent stuff for simple popping for bream here in central SC, I would assume it is a rig for trout in NC where he lived years ago.

8.5 feet #5, whatever that means.

And to experts to educate me.

Cool.

The weight matches the fly line the rod's rated for. Of course some people under/overload their reels. A 5-wt is great for trout (I've managed 20"+ on my Sage) and I use it at the pond for bluegill as well.

I use a 8-wt for saltwater (redfish, seatrout, flounder, etc).

Orvis, Clearwater.
Made in England.

The rod is a

Henry's Fork.  In a hard plastic case and a canvas wrap.  There are no markings about where it was made.

Nice setup
Made in Manchester VT for sure right down the road here (not the reel)
The reel was made at BFR British Fly Reel Owned at the time by Orvis
No need to baby it but keep it clean and it can last a long time

Yup, take it out and get some line wet

Howdy neighbor!   I miss going into the old Orvis clearance store when it was downtown.  I picked a couple rods there.

4 or 5 wt for trout

5,6 or 7 wt for bass.   7 8 9 for bigger fish like salmon or them salt water fish I know jack and schit about.    Then you can get into flex stiffness.
