Im headed to maui in late july to august. I want to bring my fly rod along. Dont really know what to expect fishing wise. I was on Kauai this summer and on my morning walks I saw people surf fishing fishing and was bummed I didn't bring my rod. Google turns up nothing but slightly negative reviews, I also dont trust fishing spots posted online. Any pointers? Im staying in Wailea, and would prefer to stay onshore, I will also have a rental car for some drives

I have heard of deep water bonefish being caught from shore. That would be a good target. The other fish I would look for is trevally. For the bones I would take a stout 8 or 9 wt and the trevally need a 12. Thats about all I've got on the subject.

I went to Maui last year and due to negative reviews online left my rod at home. I wish that I didn't. There was a fly fisherman catching fish about 150 yards from my hotel door. We were in Maalleea or something like that.

Take your rod and some flashy streamers and look for the areas that have a lot of rocks. That seemed to me to be the places that had fish within casting distance. Good luck.
