Damn man we have one trail here that's 2.3mi and 2,000ft climb, which is where last year's Gatlinburg fire originated, ironically named "the chimney tops". I feel your pain! It's funny how your trails are so different from ours. Any trail here is so covered with trees you can't see more than 50ft. And if you do have a view, it'll be through trees in a couple years. Pretty cool to see snowcapped peaks like that. I remember our trip to Colorado last year seeing snow in July. I felt like a complete tourist. View Quote The wasatch western front is all scrub until you get to about 8000 feet. If you get back up in the mountains though you get into a lot more trees. They are still covered in snow right now though. They are still skiing with 110" base at Snowbird. I'm hoping come June that I'll get some really nice alpine hikes in |

Ok..I think I figured out the Samsung ap. Turned it on, turned phone to power saver, turned location on and started. First site I cheked and realized it had paused. So I left phone on the rest of the time..that's why I have a long stright line...
Anyways..out with the Scouts on a philmont prep at the Red River Gorge. Wasn't concentrating on distance. We would hike, stop, set up camp, break camp and continue. Trying to get times down. Was hot and fun. Totaled about 10 miles. Attached File Attached File |

Right now there isn't any underbrush. It gets grown up by mid June though. I could see really well because none of the scrub oak and stuff had leafed out yet. Some places though are almost like the old growth forests with just pine needles on the ground and you can walk through under the trees. It really depends on where you are.
Zion is beautiful but different than the high alpine up north here. Utah has a lot of really different areas. Like the Unitas where it's high alpine and grass meadows and rocks. Or stansbury range which is all desert scrub on a 10k ft peak. Both within an hour drive. ETA. I'll get some pictures this summer. |

Stuck in the house due to rain until late. Had to get some mileage to get started. Not much but it is there.
Now added a 3.5L CamelBack water bladder to the current backpack. Adds some more weight and will work with the Medium Molle ruck that is coming in to be my GHB. Don't intend on getting dehydrated again. linkage startedMay 23, 2017, 7:12 PMactivityHikehike time1:16:23distance3.29 miles |

Not much but this time I had the garmin running. Have been using a 35 lb pack to help me get in condition for a long section hike of the AT later this summer. Had to do this one in an hour because that is how long SWMBO gave me before supper.
2.87 miles, 51:34 minutes. Not long or fast but a nice walk in the woods and around the pond. Picture isn't from this hike but when I was out with the bikepacking setup. Along the creek behind the pond. Attached File |

I need to get a picture with the pack on. I have a new Osprey pack and am 20 lbs lighter than the picture on page 3. About 120 miles hiking so far this year.

Late start here. Did 5 miles on Wednesday on a sunset/night hike. There's a good set of trails across the road from our condo. First time hiking them. Not the last. I hiked it with probably over 30 pounds strapped to my back in my Arc'teryx echo pack. No comfort complaints. I need to get new better affordable hiking socks. I have Kirkland hiking socks and they seem ok. Any other suggestions? I want to do 10-15 miles a week. The recording feature wigged out twice on me on Gaia GPS, but I think it was my phone. |

Welcome to the club all newcomers! The more the merrier. I'm actually this thread took off the way it did. It's my favorite thread going right now.
Some of us are doing 20mi stretches, some of us are doing 3mi stretches. Whatever works for you. Personally, my goal is to do 10mi per month to get to 100mi at the end of the year. That could be one 10mi hike, or I've mostly been doing two 5mi hikes. Pictures work great and make other hikers jealous. Anyway, we've been using a format something like this... Hike Mileage: Yearly total: (I've been adding elevation gains too, just look at previous posts, because I'm curious) |

proverbial dumb question.
the Walkmeter app calculates the amount of calories I burn on a hike Is there a way to calculate the amount of additional calories burnt due to carrying the backpack? Google gives links with calculations more scattered than GD's advice on dating or using a shotgun for HD. |

4.4 miles, 1 hr 22 min today with a 35.5 lb pack. I'm getting ready for an AT section hike in August and a Bike, Kayak, Hike with pack 20% of body weight triathlon next may. Right now I would have to carry 34 lbs for the hike. I hope to be down to about 150 so I will be carrying 30 lbs by race time.

I just found this thread, thanks to Oates.
I've gotten interested in hiking/backpacking in the last 6 months or so....we started a walking challenge thing at work, and there are some discounts on our group health insurance for meeting certain benchmarks. I track my distances with my fitbit, which isn't exact, but it reasonably accurate. It measures distance, steps, and elevation. I shoot for around 6 miles a day, but typically get a little more, especially on weekends. Anyway, last Saturday, I hit about 16.5 miles and 750 of elevation change (laugh all you want, buy I live in middle GA...hills aren't really a thing here! ). Attached File A month ago or so, I went up to Blood Mountain in North Ga. Got more floors that day! Attached File View from the top. Attached File |
