I bought a military rain
parka as surplus for

matching pants.

Good kit.

I've used my Army issue rain gear with great success in the AK interior.  The Army issue stuff is not heavy and survived a walk in caribou hunt on the north slope/north of the Brooks Range.  The Grunden's gear is good, but damn it is heavy.  Most of the folks who work the fishing industry up here use Grunden's or Haley Hansen gear.  I'd encourage you to check out the Army issue stuff....it is cheap and effective.

Are you going to be working in it, or carrying it while hiking and putting it on when it rains? I like my Eastern Mountain Sports Thunderhead rain gear for hiking, camping, and driving the topless Jeep in everything from torrential downpours to just using it as a windbreaker when temps are in the 60s. Flapping in the 60-70mph breeze hasn't hurt it yet.

Are you a working commercial fisherman, or just need something in your pack in case it rains during your hunt?

Sounds like you got it worked out, I would echo what others have said, for hunting and walking in the rain, I have mainly used military surplus gore tex, not too heavy and works pretty well with wool underneath.

If you won't be moving around that much, such as fishing on a boat or maybe some yard work, the grundens takes heavy rain better, but would be too heavy for hiking up a hillside.

for fishing small streams and rivers I wear my neoprene waders and a waist length rain parka, seems to do well.

I use Frogg Toggs

I own some Frogg Toggs and Marmot rain gear. But by far my favorite shell is my ArcTeryx Alpha FL. If I had to do it again, I would probably get the Alpha SV. But only because I prefer to go over the top and get the best when I can swing it. Anyways... ArcTeryx stuff doesn't come cheap, but it's worth it. Anyways... these technical shells are really much more than "rain gear" and if you're going to just be mostly sedentary in the rain, they're way overkill. But if you plan to hike, climb and other strenuous outdoor activity... it's hard to beat them. For less strenuous activities (fishing, hunting, etc) I'd be looking at the Cabelas Guidewear.

This company had New Old Stock Woodland Gore-Tex Jacket at steal of deal - $30. Back in the day these were $200+ jackets or more.

They are down to Desert / Night Grid in adult sizes (XX-Large Long). Still a deal at $30.
