Howdy, Hunters:

I've shot rifles and pistols for years, but now live in the woods and am looking for my first turkey gun.

Here's what I'm settled on:
- 12 ga.
- Semi-auto (because recoil)
- Shorter or adjustable length of pull
- 18-20" barrel
- Can mount a red dot
- Threaded for different choke options

Preferences:
- Magazine as long as the barrel
- Under $1200

What should I be looking at?

Take a look at the Mossberg 930 series.

I guess no one makes an 18" barrel threaded for chokes for their autoloader, do they? Mossberg doesn't.

Benelli M4, but would have to look used in that price range. I used one all last season.

You might laugh, but this has been my turkey gun for the past few years. 20 ga 12.5” M2. I’ve been using the Fed 3” no. 5 1 5/16 oz with the flite control wads. One shot kills out to 35 yards.

A couple things to consider:

Many states have magazine restrictions when hunting. If yours is one of them you'll have to plug the magazine tube, which means an extended tube just adds useless weight. (Unless you're going to use it for HD as well)

Turkey hunting isn't duck hunting. Again, I'm sure it varies by state, but in Michigan I think the most tags you can get is two (one spring, one fall - in my area only spring). If I fire more than 2 turkey loads a year I'm doing it wrong, so recoil isn't an issue.

I would probably echo the 1187 sentiment, although a ton of turkeys have been taken with a basic 870 pump.

You could get a benelli m4 or maybe even one of the new clones if it’s just for a turkey gun. Last year was my first turkey season and I used my m4. It worked well but i ordered a 20ga Franchi affinity turkey gun for future seasons

Headed out to chase the long beards in about a half hour.   Gonna be carrying a Thompson Center 56 caliber muzzleloader shotgun.

The Winchester SX4 NWTF 12ga is on my bucket list for a purchase.

Edit: bought one and finished the transfer Wednesday. Took it into the turkey woods this morning.

That’s awesome. You have inspired me to take out my 11.5” SBS 20ga  870. I will be doing some testing with different chokes and TSS loads. Since barrel length barely effects velocity in a shotgun and doesn’t change patterning, I see no reason not to. The SBS would be handy in the blind.
