19 days until WI archery season opens (Sept 16).

Good luck to all. Hopefully I’ll get to post a couple pics myself.

VA urban archery & early firearms opens Saturday!

Edit:
NOVA Early Firearms - Ground blind from 100yds left side quartering away. Took a step forward just as the 150gr WIN Super-X.308 broke.  Entered a little back but it all worked out.  Went maybe 25 yds before piling up.

Gotta love a Redneck Brand hoist for open field processing!

My daughter's youth season lasted ten minutes into legal hours this year. .350 Legend, 180 grain Winchester Deer Season XP. great penetration. In the base of the neck, destroyed a lung and out the hindquarter. She thought she missed, we found her 25 yards away, out of sight because of obstructions.

Looks like a heavy one, good freezer filler.

Small antlers like that are nice for craft work too-no great loss if you cut them up to make something.

ETA- the only luck I've had so far. Attachment Attached File

I'd have left it alone if it had tried to run away. Instead, it sat there, too inviting to say no. IA squirrel season is open too, squirrels taste good, and I'd never shot one with a bow before.

I got these two today.  I used one of my ARs in .223.  Scope is a Burris 1-6x RT6.  I usually use handloads, but today I used Sierra factory ammo loaded with the 64 grain Game Changer.  I shot one at about 80 yards and 100 yards for the other.

Got on the board yesterday.   Not a monster, but the first deer I've taken when one of my kids was with me, so that made it special.   She was running in through the woods, when I stopped her with a call.  Shot didn't hit as high as it looks in the pic, took out the top of the heart and she dropped immediately.  .450 Bushmaster with Hornady Black is undefeated when I do my part.

Are you allowed to keep the antlers from a found deer?
I don’t know how each state handles this.

In IA you call a conservation officer and he comes to look at the deer(or any antler with a piece of skull attached, meaning it's from a dead deer) to make sure it's not poached. Then the officer can give you a salvage tag for it.

With my 92 y/o mom ill and my son home from the military on emergency leave, didn't think I'd get a chance to hunt the muzzle loader opening week. Well mom is doing good and Jr. is headed back to work so I found some time to get after it.

Hunted Sat am saw a bunch of doe, skipped Sat night to watch the FSU game with my son. Went back Sun evening, same thing, lots of doe.

This am I managed to get a big body 3-pt, he's never going to be anything so why not. He was standing about 25 yards to my right looking at me, never saw him approach. As he trotted off I whistled and he stopped... big mistake. DRT.

A few minutes later, a large 4-pt was looking at me, I once again got caught not paying attention, when he trotted off he was a little farter out so I didn't risk a bad shot.

This evening hunt was chalked full of deer sightings, about twenty minutes before legal quitting time, this buck came out into the field off to my right at about 125 yards. I am fortunate I saw him as there is only a foot or two width wise visibility and he just so happened to stop in the gap. DRT. He has a nice scar on his back I assume from a fence.

Off to a good start for the 23-24 season.

I called the local conservation officer he said take it home ill drop a tag off at your house. That's pretty much how it works sometimes they come look at them but this year is so bad there are people calling them left and right

Looks more like a bullet or broadhead graze, too straight for a fence.  A 4.5 year old 9 point I shot about 10 years ago had a bullet wound that started on it's muzzle, took out his eye, and exited out it's ear.  Damn thing was still dogging doe's even though it was obviously quite fresh. . . no scabbing.  Tough animals.

Got a 2x2 mulie yesterday at 250 yards with my 308; Savage Model 10T, 18" barrel with a Sandman-K, and shooting Hornady Precision Hunter which is a 178gr ELD-X. He was facing me and the shot entered his neck and went into his lungs; he crumpled and died instantly. Bullet fully expanded in the chest cavity and did not penetrate into the abdomen.  Almost passed on him but it was my birthday and seemed like a fitting gift for myself. I hunt to fill the freezer, not to mount on the wall so I didn't want to risk not running into any other deer the rest of the season. What is funny is that this hill is the same hill I shot a 3x4 mulie from last year.
