I dusted off my 30 year old traditions inline 50 cal. I need deer ammo.

Opinions on 50 cal hornady bore driver 290 grain over (2) 50 grain pyrodex pellets.
This rifle is 1:32 twist, and uses #11 musket caps as primers.

Eastern Ohio woods hunting so very likely 50-100 yards, there is one nice clear-cut that could go to 200 yards.

Anything better out there?

Thank you.

Anyone have a tin of #11 percussion caps they would part with?

Last time i was at Cabelas in Cincinnati I thought i saw a tin or two of #11 caps.

My encore really likes Barnes sabots (245 grain?) over 100 grains of American pioneer pellets.

I was incorrect. I found #11 caps, the rifle takes musket caps.

Anyone have a tin of musket caps?

I use 290gr Barnes copper sabots with 110gr of Blackhorn 209.  Great accuracy and I can get 15-20 shots before I feel like I need to clean the bore.

Harvester sabots and .452 Hornady 240gr XTP. Cheap and effective. I think less than $10 per 50 sabots and $38 per 100 bullets

I've been in a couple Fleet Farms that had them lately, almost bought them in Waupaca, Wisconsin even though I don't have anything that uses them! See if there's a FF near you

ETA I hadn't read far enough to see about musket caps. I didn't even know that was a thing

We've taken close to 100 deer with Knight saboted all lead 260 grain HP over 90gr 2F.
Only recovered a few but those all looked like this.

Shots typically 30-50yds, but some out around 100

If the gun is that old - you may need to be shooting a maxi ball or a patched round ball

Two decades ago everyone just put a .44 cal 240 grain soft point (.44 mag reload component) into a cheap plastic sleeve.  Its what everyone did - works great and its cheap.  Then the ammo companies figured that if they put the bullet into the sleeve they could mark up the price 13,000%

Just get a box of .44 or .45 reloading soft or hollow points and a bag of sabots.  The rest is all marketing.

Amen brother.

No need for fancy bullets.

I have been shooting 240 grain .44 SJHP and sabots with 3 50 grain pyrodex pellets in my CVA inline for years. Very accurate and deadly.

Before I got my inline, I shot the same bullet but with 90 grains of loose pyrodex in my CVA Frontier rifle.

100gr 777 or pyrodex and 240gr XTP works great.

Lots of info on muzzleloader.com

This is what I use too. Furthest kill was ~178 yards. Cheap and effective. 120gr of 777.

Not overall familiar with the Lyman in-lines, but Thompson/Centers are able to change the nipples. You could possibly install an #11 nipple and have an easier time finding caps. I not sure if #11 are hot enough for igniting 777 or Blackhorn 209 powder. You might be stuck using Pyrodex or real black powder. Make sure if using your own sourced sabot cup and bullets that the match. cups for 50 cal coming in both .45 and .429.
