I have a pair of Baofeng g11s radios. I was wondering if any aftermarket antennas would improve range? I know I can’t expect a lot, but just curious if anyone has had success with longer or aftermarket antennas. Thanks!

They only time I saw a marked improvement was when I connected my HT to my Base Station Antenna, about 30ish' up, with LMR 400 as feed line. Same setup I hook to my 991a... That obviously made a huge difference. |

How portable are you envisioning with said antenna?
As above, a base antenna would obviously be best. SMA to PL259 adaptors and pigtails are a dime a dozen. For potential emergency deployment in the field, I pack a roll-up J-pole made of ladder line and twenty feet of feedline. It can be put up anywhere and have the range of your HT greatly increased in about two minutes. Using a VX7R, I’ve tested it from the center of my in-laws’ basement (for the ultimate in poor conditions) and was able to hit repeaters that were impossible using a rubber duck antenna. |

Roll up J pole with some coax? Toss a line and hoist it up into a tree for some extended portable comms range. Outside of that an HT is just an HT aka 5W.

I was thinking something like this.

I have had luck with those Nagoya 15-16” dual band antennas.
But lately I’ve been buying the Diamond version and it’s proven to have better durability. N9TAX is the J-pole guru, I have four of his dual banders. I admit I’ve paid for antennas I can probably make. |

Height, i.e. line of sight, is most important. A better antenna is effectively transmitting and receiving more energy by being more resonant or creating a different radiation pattern, but again creating LOS is 100x more effective than increasing power a watt.
