The curse of the early adopter. I managed to escape it when I bought my FT-950. But there has been another firmware upgrade since then.
go it back today... works perfectly. no documention of what was wrong or replaced. i am hoping it was user error but i do think it had an issue.
got a letter from yaesu today. looks like the only fix was firmware. it shows they flashed it, then tested. no mention of replaced parts and service time was under an hour.
i know yaesu had a recall to vendors to upgrade this firmware but mine obviously didn't get it. if you have a data cable it is user flashable and easy to do. i just figure i'd save 30.00 and let them do it. |
Thanks for the update. Let us know how it works. Didn't yours have the clock problem and the upside-down compass?

new firmware does appear to have a clock bug.
this did not happen in the old firmware. it's off by one hour no matter what you set it for. I have an email in to yaesu. i am going to try to make them give me a data cable for the trouble so i don't have to buy one just to update this thing. I figure the problems i have had it's worth a shot. Don't know how responsive they will be but i think a cable would be cheaper than them shipping the radio and paying a tech to re-flash it..... again. |
1.2 firmware will be out soon.....
Data cable is $55 and is a serial I wonder if the USB cable that RT Systems makes will work? |
i don't really use the clock anyway and oddly wnough the position reports reflect the correct times on aprs. Best i can figure it's pulling the gps time and the display is just not correcting it. i don't really use the clock so it's not a real issue to me more than just annoying.
this radio is having growing pains like anything else new |
just got a phone call from yaesu support about my clock issue.
they say i am the first to report this since the new firmware has been loaded. I got the name of an engineer and was asked to send in some data off the radio and they would be working to replicate my problem and get back to me asap. I gotta admit yaesu has bent over backwards to make this good. i give their support folks a major A+. |

just got a return call from yaesu....
the radios are having issues recognising DST and this is causing the problem. The current reccomendation is set the radio for a time zome that corrects your issue. supposedly this will go away once we revert off DST <on?> in the next few weeks and work properly until the next time change. They are working on a firmware fix in the meantime. |
I wondered if it was DST since it was one hour off. They must not do DST in Japan. Somewhere I read that the compass being 180 degrees out of wack was because of some Japanese cultural difference but I don't know if that's true or if it's just more internet BS.

Sorry to re-surface an old thread, but the problems with FTM-350R's continue...
My eight day old FTM-350R, running the latest 1.2 firmware, is locking up intermittently during APRS receive. There's an old thread about this problem at world-wide-rx here: http://www.worldwidedx.com/vhf-uhf-bands-vhf-uhf-rigs/42309-yaesu-ftm-350-lock-up-problems.html Hopefully the FTM-350AR version coming out in December will fix these problems. I'll keep you updated as to what I hear back from Yaesu Support. Cheers, Robert. P.S. The_Beer_Slayer - thanks for the tip on RAM Mounts. I ordered the mount that you listed, and I'm awaiting delivery. |
i am betting he has another issue. mine has been flawless since the upgrade.
for the record the ar as i understand it just comes with some different accessories the firmware is the same and i can upgrade mine to that code minus the new head mount and have the same radio. i have not heard of many lockups on the forums since the new code came out. |

AZRobbo: did you perform the upgrade or did it come that way? If you did it, did you update to 1.1 then 1.2 or just to 1.2? Do you have a GPS attached?
I took advantage of the Black Friday price and will be moving the Kenwood inside and installing the Yaesu in the Jeep. |

Yes, I installed the upgrade myself, and went straight from 1.0 to 1.2. 1.2 was the only new firmware available, and is the firmware that makes the 350R into the 350AR. Yes, I also have the GPS installed - the small GPS module that attaches to the back of the faceplate. Please let me know if you experience any lockups when the APRS modem is turned on. I'm starting to wonder if maybe my radio had been inventory a while, and thus never got the original fixes. (The thread I linked describes the problem that I'm having EXACTLY. Even the screen-shots are the same.) Thanks all. |
call yaesu and send it to them.
it's worth not having the radio for a couple of weeks vs.. spending a month banging your head against the wall. |

Do they drop the 70 bucks off after you order , in the cart it still shows it as 469 ..... but the ad up top shows it as 399 . |

Not sure as I ordered over the phone because I had a question about something. I just went to their site and noticed that while the banner was still visible, clicking the link does not show the black Friday discount of $70 (I know it did yesterday show two red lines of discounts), so I don't think it will add it later. Take screen shots of the banner, the product page and your cart and try calling tomorrow if it doesn't start working later. [/list=1] |

I just checked HRO again, and the extra $70 discount has been added and extended through Wednesday.

Thanks for all the info on the radio went and looked today and this has made the short list with the spousal unit. Looks like I know where some of my tax return may be going since she is wanting to have duplicate radios in each vehicle. Time to sell off some older equipment to fund the upgrade I guess.
I've had this radio in my Jeep for 2 months now, and I absolutely love it. Very fast to navigate through the major functions, and APRS is easy to get a tactical overview of assets in your area (even with no map).
So, TBS, how is the radio working still? I'm looking at the new one (ftm-350ar) for my truck. ANy other problems with the unit? I've heard the sound from the headunit isn't very loud (from eham), do you have that problem?
i too would like to hear about this radio and its performance in the past few months. anyone else is free to chime in too.

radio has been 100% since i got it back for yaesu.
audio from the head unit is not LOUD but it's ok for my use. mine is mounted on the dash of my suburban with the radio unit located on the center hump next to my 4x4 shifter. i have the audio set to both the head and unit and find it to be plenty load roaring down the interstate on mud tires. the volume control sits on about 70%. Adding a good external speaker would solve any audio volume issues you would have otherwise. APRS works well and is amazingly easy to setup. basically enter callsign, enable modem and set vfo to freq. radio is preset for almost everything else. i LOVE the display. bright during the day and VERY easy to read even in direct sunlight. at night it is almost too bright and i generally turn the backlight almost off. tx/rx are excellent. Altimeter and Baro pressure are pretty close. I use the gps module that attaches directly to the head unit without the external cable and have no issues with signal. In fact i put it in my console as a test and was still getting satellite signal. i have not tried the waypoint routing <and likely never will> but it would appear to work just fine. X-band repeat works just fine and is easier to configure than on my ft-8800. if i was in the market for a good mobile 2m/440 right now i wouldn't hesitate to buy this rig again. Yeasu customer service is great and this rig has performed just as described once i got my gps issue resolved. |
for the record i am using the old style stock head mount on my dash. it's held up well and holding fine. it's worked for me ONLY becuase i ahve a flat dash the size of a football field in this truck. a normal car dash will not work with this old style mount.

bringing this thread back to life.
I just took a NIB FTM-350R in trade, still trying to figure how I am going to mount this up in the Tahoe. Currently I have all my radios mounted in a Gamber Johnson console (FT-857d, FT-7800 and HTX-10) I am trying to figure out if I can mount the control panel on one of the blank plates I have for the console. |
I would think you could do that to the blank plates then again I don't remember what mounting brackets come with that radio for the head, I want to see pictures of your setup! I wish I have a big vehicle to put radios in, my little Focus doesn't cut it for radio mounting locations!
the head unit has a single scre in the back that goes into the mount. you could easily just bolt that to the plate

I had an extra GPS mounting pad, mounted it on the dash and the suction cup mount works well with it.
Now I just need to figure out the mounting of the transceiver body in the console. BTW the 220 sucks, why even bother if it only has 1 watt? I am liking it though |
