Hold the tape body in your right hand so you can pinch the tape to stop it from retracting.  The use your left to put the end of the wire at the end of the tape.  Use your left arm pull tape end and wire end together then pinch wire and tape with right hand and repeat the process allowing the already measured wire and use tape fall to floor.  At 20 feet restart the process, just don't let go of your last wire pinch.

Looks good, how was the building?

That's about the process I was anticipating.  Thank you.  The build went well.  Built the SWR indicator module in about an hour the first night.  Wrapped up the wiring and the remainder of the build including the labels in about 2 hours last night.  That's with a 5 and 3 year old running around.  Looking forward to at least giving it a quick test soon, but we have snow followed by single digit temps in the forecast.

Yesterday I had some success getting APRS running. I've got my IC-7000 connected to my shack computer decoding packets using aprsis32 and UZ7HO's soundcard modem. APRSdroid, an $18 cable and a baofeng are coming together nicely to serve as a mobile rig.  I even navigated the menus to send position fixes out of the VX-8DR.

Got  my /P laptop setup with Windows 7 and installed HRD and manged to get it all working together in fairly short order and make a couple PSK31 40M QSOs.  Takes a bit of getting used to using the smaller 13" screen and not my large widescreen monitor with a secondary display on my main PC.

Made some changes to the 160m & 80m wire add-ons to the 6-BTV, mainly paracord hold off lines to get the vertical portions more vertical.   While checking results, heard the Manana net chatting with a Hawaii station & made a short voice contact with the net control in Oregon.

Where oh where can one get one of those hand nibblers nowadays?

I used to have one years decades ago when I was in high school and making stuff.

Went to look for it to help a buddy put a square hole in his power supply for some powerpoles and can't find it anywhere.

It looks like the original manufacturer no longer makes it.  I think mine came from Radio Shack.

Mine is about 20 years old, from Radio Shack. It still works. If I ever see another one somewhere I am buying it just in case this one breaks.

I bought myself a new android tablet.

$130 prime. 32gb space, 1gb ram (meh), gps, bluetooth.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CCYEIW2/ref=sxts2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482048045&sr=2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&tag=vglnk-c102-20&tag=vglnk-c102-20

I wanted to be able to use aprsdroid offline with a big section of a state without depending on a tiny screen and storage limitation of my phone. I got it working with my mobilinkd. The built in GPS works great so far.

When I start picking up HF equipment, I'll be using wolphii apps with it as well. Now I'm just flexing the battery performance.

Started building a 9:1 transformer for an end fed antenna. This is going to be part of a gift that goes with an HF upconverter for a friend's SDR dongle. It is probably not going to to see any use for transmitting, so I am just building it so he will have something to listen to with his upconverter.

Still needs the antenna wire and soldering done. I am going to cover the whole thing in some clear heat shrink tubing.

Got my 12v adaptor for my /p laptop in from Amazon and within minutes (just long enough to make sure it worked) I had the cigarette lighter plug cut off and and was putting some Power Poles on it.  Put Power Poles on the cigarette lighter plug-in as well so I can still use it for work if needed since we run the same types of machines.

Hmmm hope it's not a symptom of something when I'm hacking up brand new cords to Power Pole them.   Heck I didn't even take the cord wrap or plastic off it yet.

I reviewed multiple radio specifications to figure out which one to replace my 31 year old Yaesu FT-1000D with.

Then I started reviewing "reviews" of other people who have the radios already.
Some were good, some were horrible, and some have no clue.
I guess that's why they call them reviews.

Then I started watching videos on the radios, controls, filtering, receivers, etc.
The search continues-

I got a package of QSL cards from the bureau.  I have been looking for an inexpensive plate transformer for a while, always wanted to build an RF linear (I have built my fair share of guitar amps).  I may have found one via an old listing on the net, they think they still have it but the sales guy said he'd get back to me on Tuesday.  1050V secondary at 440mA, should be good for a single 4CX250 or similar on 6m, 2m, or 70cm.  Maybe use it for a simple EME station, should get 250W out.  I hope they still have it, at $30 it is a steal!

Forgot to add mine:

Had a ~6 hour drive each way to near Atlanta.  Did as I usually do and slapped the 857 and cheap mag mount antenna on the rental car and set it to .52, as this was a last minute trip and repeater programming is a bear on an unknown trip like this.  Didn't expect much.

Made about a dozen contacts on .52, about half of them were me answering calls!  That far surpasses my cruddy record on .52, even calling the whole way on a longer trip.  And I admit I was lazy with this one, didn't call out much at all... probably 10 times each way.

I don't know if it was the holiday weekend or what, but it was great.  I even had a few surprisingly long and great QSOs with folks working from really moderate base station setups.  No repeater contacts at all, just some guy who happened to be at his rig while I was in the 10 minute window.  Pretty damn cool!

I also tried to see if I could work HF from the hotel.  I requested a second story (top) room, and the window actually opened (do they still make those?!).  Either way, the RFI was still S9+, and it was raining outside, so no HF for me.

The bad:
The CMP store in Anniston, Alabama was closed for the holidays
The CAF museum was closed

The good:
Apparently Peachtree City, Georgia is home to the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (Used to be the Confederate Air Force but, you know, feelings)  The museum/hangar was closed for aircraft maintenance, but fortunately stupid rules don't apply to me, so I welcomed myself in and was greeted with the private tour from the awesome guys who run the place and work on these beautiful retired warbirds.  Oh, and these all still fly... regularly.  The P51 Mustang was getting an engine replacement, and others were getting a full overhaul. I would have paid extra to see that, but (sshh!).  The Corsair was out of town, but I didn't pitch too much of a fit, considering.

I took pitchers for you fellas!

No great DX contacts to report. Hung around the shack on my day off and put in an offer to buy a Collins 30L-1  amp to pair up with my Kenwood TS520 or Kenwood TS -820S. Only looking for an extra 400-500 watts and for around $500.00 with new caps, diodes and good tubes am looking forward in having the classic Collins.
Built a new computer for the shack and need to hook up my Softrock Ensemble ll SDR receiver.
Fun to be able to have new projects going!!!!

I have ordered the additional parts I need to build a foot pedal switch adaptor for my FT-450D.

When I'm done, I'll have a little project box with an RJ-45 and headphone jack on the back to connect  to the radio, and RJ-45, headphone, and mic on the front (yes, headphone is a passthrough) and 3 buttons on top (up, down, xmit) and a connection on the side for the foot pedal.  This way I can use it with the hand mic or the headset I've got now.  The up/down buttons are reprogrammable in the radio, so I didn't want to lose them.

If it's too much of a pain to fit into the box, or I screw it all up, I'll just sacrifice a cat-5 cable I've got and solder the headset jack and footswitch connection to it.  Maybe the up/down too... we'll see.  I hope to make it all work in the project box though.

I bought a used 857D on ebay today for $600. That will be my first HF setup, and should be here next week. With tax and shipping I ended up saving about $250 going this route, so hopefully it doesn't catch on fire when I turn it on.

Now I need to pick out a tuner and an antenna!

Congrats!

Start with a resonant antenna. Try a single band 20m dipole. It won't require a tuner and get you to making contacts quick.

This was for a Panasonic (click here) but the company Pwr+ makes a few different models.

Just put "Lenovo [model] car charger" in your search terms.  PWR+ makes the one I got and it seems to work well and reasonably priced if you want to add that to the search.
