It's amazing how the state has fallen since then.  Did go to a wedding at Bolt castle years ago.

Stuff just leaves the collective consciousness I guess.  Its hard to explain to people how much has changed when they have not experienced it themselves.   For example: People drive through Utica , Little Falls or Amsterdam and just assume they were always a dump.  

I was in my single digits back in the 1960's. Back then, Nassau County was a high flying county that was ranked in the top 5 of best places in the United States. We had a county road route system with unique "Nassau County" signage. County traffic lights were painted in the county's orange and blue colors (traffic light bodies were blue and the lens covers were orange - poles where half blue and half orange). Our rainwater sumps were well manicured and the trees surrounding them were trimmed nicely every year. Roads were well maintained. The county had nice parks and beaches.

The county road route system in Nassau was disbanded yet most county's in New York still have them. A big problem for Nassau was their signs did not conform to the new Federal standard of blue sign with yellow lettering and the county decided not to spend money replacing them (yet Suffolk, Rockland, etc. still have county routes). Traffic lights operated by the county were all painted yellow (New York State DOT traffic lights are green or green with yellow edge on the back panel). In the 1980's, sump maintenance was basically stopped and they all became overgrown with trees, weeds and garbage. Many of the parks and beaches were turned over to the towns to maintain. Various county roads were turned over to the towns as well to take care of.
