Greetings.
It's been a while since I have done one of these threads. I've done one for my TRP's journey as well as for my Draco SBR. Pretty much I'll document all that occurs with the pistol as well as keep a running range report as I put rounds down range. This will also be a comparison thread of sorts as I will compare the VP9 to my range/HD workhorse a Glock 17 Gen4. While I have a Glock 19 in the stable, I do not feel its a fair comparison as 1.) I prefer the G17 and 2.) these are both fullsize pistols. For the record - I have zero issues concealing a G17 IWB and do it quite often when not carrying my G43. Do you see where I'm coming from? That's right I'm a tried and true Glock shooter. Background: I'm just a dude who likes shooting and fortunate enough to be able to do so often. With that said the wife and I are expecting our first in July so I predict a chunk of my shooting time will disappear (for reference I shoot almost every weekend, sometimes 2x a weekend). My goal is to get 1000 rounds through the VP9 by the end of the month. -------------- The pistol: HK VP9 - picked up from PSA for $519 shipped, with transfer I'm in under $550, which is Glock Gen4 territory. Initial observations: This is a quality made firearm and the ergonomics are insane. I have the small everything small back and medium sides on it and it fits my medium sized hands like a glove. The trigger is nicer than my G17 with the "-" connector and I'm learning the paddle release. Changes: As with all my pistols I do two things - buy a PJ IWB holster and a 10-8 rear sight. Both are on the way and should be here this weekend (hopefully before I shoot Saturday) along with the rear slide "wing" replacement tabs. I prefer the streamlined feel and look so the wings are going. I'll keep a running update as I put rounds downrange and naturally include a lot of pictures. ---------------- DSC_7109 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr With the competition DSC_7111 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7113 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr Stay tuned. |

I lol'd at the backwards bullet. Nice hat tip to the fellas at HK. I wonder if they'll ever live that down.

I was going to add to the VP9 porn, but your pics put mine to shame ETA: I feel that the VP9 blows away my Glocks, except for one thing: size (VP9 vs G19). If/When HK releases a VP9C then my G19 will get 100% retired. |
|
I'm also a Glock guy, and I have an incoming VP9 from PSA. Should arrive at my FFL tomorrow. I'd heard good things about the VP9, and the PSA deal was too good to pass up.
I have 2 gen4 34s, and a gen4 17, as well as multiple copies of all 5 gen3 9mm versions. Looking forward to trying it out and comparing. |

Love your threads. 20+ year Glock guy here and never had any interest in HK pistols until the VP9. Looking forward to updates.

Not having any prior ownership of plastic guns it came down to the VP9 or a G34 for me. The 34 as I liked how it came out of the box and it's smoother than a 17 without feeling sluggish like a 17L. The VP9 has a grip I don't have to adjust to and just felt like home.
Many a flame war has started by comparing Glock to...well...anything. |

Very interested in this thread... I have been an HK fan for the last 17 years and have carried a USP 45 and a P2000 for the last 8. I love the HK mag release. I was going to get a VP9, but now I am thinking G17... Mostly for the aftermarket support and simplicity of the gun. I actually shoot Glocks very good. My only gripe is the wrong grip angle. How is the gen 4 with the changeable back straps? Can you get rid of the stupid hump that the bottom?

The VP9 will not replace it - it may replace my 19 which if it does I'll give to my father in law as he is wanting a 9mm Glock. In short it takes a good amount of effort to work the Glock frame to be anywhere near as comfortable as the VP9 is. I've removed finger grooves and thinned back straps on many of my Glocks over the years. I've even cut down a 17 to take 19 mags. Unless your comfortable making the changes yourself sending one off to remove the "hump" is my suggestion. The "hump" on a 17 is much lower than that of the 19 which makes it much more comfortable. All of that said the thinnest Gen4 frame option (no backstrap) G17 is the best feeling one out there, so much that the one in the post above I just undercut the trigger guard and it cerakoted patriot brown. Here's the kicker - didn't have to do any of that with the VP9. I can't make any true assessment on it until I shoot Sunday afternoon, but over the years I've leaned that if it feels good in my hands I'll most likely shoot it well. But everyone should have at least one Glock. |

I don't like the fact that I cannot get a high grip on it or the 17 though because of slide bite and the backstraps makes it worse to shoot and was badly thought out, a band aid fix that only made things worse. Small, medium, and large backstraps and not normal Glock size, big, bigger, and biggest. Finger grooves makes me a better shooter but to each their own. But with that said Glocks do not shoot good in my hands which in my experience is due to a badly made trigger. I can suck it up though with the G20 though, after all I have 15 rounds of hard hitting 10mm to spray and pray with against a four legged predator and I'm bound to hit something vital at least once or twice, right? |

I have had my VP9 for over a year now. Possibly the best semi auto pistol on the market.
This coming from a 1911 guy. I got the gun home from the store, cleaned and lubed it. Configured the grips same as yours. And then shot it, And shot it some more. With this gun I shoot two boxes of ammo and then go looking for more. it's that much fun to shoot. |

Ill be looking for your review after tomorrow to see if that may help me. I was looking to buy next week. My local gun store has both in stock right now. The G17 would be a project gun that I will alter because I like doing stuff like that. The VP9 will most likely stay stock. I do have a G43 that I really like and can shoot pretty good even with my huge hands... |

Do you have the ability to shoot both?
Personally I hate that question as I need several range trips at at least 1000 rounds through a gun to decide if I like it. Sometimes less is needed - I got out of the P320 I had after one trip to the range. |

I've had a few elitist comments made about the VP9 from some fellow shooters and arfcommers.
"don't hate my style" |

Leaving the range.
500 flawless rounds. Full report when I get home. |
|
Fin's VP9 made it easy to knock around the little popper tree targets at 25 meters. Hitting the steel B-27 targets at 75 yards was fun and easy, as well. I definitely like the VP9..
...Even if we suck and they hate us. |

Perpetuating that lie still doesn't make it a truth. It just means you're spreading disinformation.

Rounds Fired: 500 Ammo used: A wild mix of Tula, Perfecta, and Federal Aluminum case, all 115 grain. Also shot were 147 grain Speer Gold Dots as well as some American Eagle 124 grain. Issues: None Grip configuration: I tried several different configurations using medium and small inserts and backstraps. In the end I shot the best with the small inserts and backstrap. Shooting observations: This is an outstanding pistol to shoot, it is smooth with minimal recoil and muzzle flip. Accuracy is outstanding! It truly is zero’d at 25M (27y) as I was shooting low but tight at 5, 10, and 15 y. We moved back to 27y and were swinging plates on the tree easily as well as running the plate racks. There is an image of three sight pictures out there and this is setup (at least this pistol) for sight image #3 where the dot covers the area of desired impact. I have all of my other guns set up for sight image #2 where the top of the front / rear cut the bull (impact area) right in the middle. I am going to get a 5.9mm front sight which according to posts I’ve read will produce the desired result. Trigger is outstanding as well, while the travel is a smidge longer than the G17 its not noticeable during live fire. This is going to be a keeper. Would I get this or a G17? I’d suggest BOTH but it’s too soon for me to make a strong verdict as I have 18,000+ rounds through Glocks and only 500 through the VP9. I will say this, it will replace my G19 and I’ve decided to let my father in law have it for he wants a 9mm. Going to do the 2000 round challenge before I clean it (will wipe down outside) and see what happens Pictures: DSC_7201 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7203 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7204 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7205 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7206 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr DSC_7207 by The Dorsal Fin, on Flickr |

Good to see another very positive review! I should pick up mine from my FFL tomorrow night and I'm quite anxious to join the ranks of those who enjoy this pistol.

I broke 2000 rounds with mine a few weeks ago. Not a single malfunction. 1000x Tulammo, a few hundred Herters brass, a few hundred Herters aluminum case/polymer jacket stuff, some 147gr, and WWB.
The best pistol I've ever owned hands down. Long time 1911 guy about to sell my last 1911 because it sits around and collects dust. Everyone I let shoot this pistol is sold after the first magazine-- one buddy bought one, another is saving for one. Ergonomics, accuracy, trigger, comfort, recoil, return-to-target, all outstanding. Reloads are the fastest I've ever been able to do using my trigger finger with the ambi-paddle. My only gripe was that I had to re-train my grip to keep from holding the slide release with my right thumb, but it's subconscious now. I threw it in snow/ice/mud, got it hot, let it freeze, water dunked it, didn't clean it for the first 1000 rounds (factory lube)-- she keeps eating everything I feed her. |

Liking this gun creates butt hurt and controversy.
It immediately labels one a fan boy and Heretic. It's just another option and not a bad choice. |

How do the spent cases look using the federal aluminum? I'm afraid to use it thru my hk cause of the stepped chamber.

The only stuff I've been able to get the VP9 to choke on was that Tula Brassmaxx ammo that came in the 100 round tubs from Walmart, but I think the rounds were out of spec, as they also locked up a USPc and Glock 19. It's odd how light the recoil spring in the VP9 feels to me though, you can shoot really weak stuff like the bulk UMC, but still tamps down the recoil in 124+p Gold Dots. Conversely, the RSA in my Gen 4 G19 feels about the same when shooting the Gold Dots, but it's on the ragged edge of choking with the UMC. |
