I don't know anything about installing sights first hand on a 1911, but the front post looks to tall, or the rear too low.

Other than that, AWESOME! I am jealous

From that range target, I might be right. ^^
Or completely wrong...  I don't know
I'm still jealous!

a nicely tuned 1911 can give you 1-2 inch groups at a hundred yards with a mechanical rest.....

"nicely tuned"?  1-2" groups at 100?  My BS meter is going off.  There have been extensive tests of BARRELS in a holding fixture.  There are FEW barrel manufacturers capable of even 1/2" groups at 50 yards.  That's without the barrel in a gun.  Putting a gun in a fixture now brings slide to frame fit into play, not to mention everything else.

Are you using factory ammo or hand loaded, hand weighed loads?  Nevermind.  It doesn't matter.  "Nicely tuned", 1-2" groups at 100 isn't going to happen.

look at some of your competition shooters all rounds in the head at 100 yards (granted from a bench rest) that's about 5-6 inch groups remove the human error factor....and where and who did these extensive tests.....

ETA...I have read some of those barrel test..so you have a fixture that holds the barrel and it is fired....but each individual barrel is not "Fitted" to the fixture.......so I hardly consider test such as those all inclusive.....

and yes I am talking about specific hand loads and not necessarily in 45 ACP......

Real Range Report!

Finally got to get out to do some shooting:

setup at about 15 yards shooting at a barrel

shot about 50 rounds that day, only to find out that our target was full of wasps
...good thing it was cold out or they would have tore into us

Here is one of the better groups from the 50 rounds I shot...almost have the sights dialed in.

I did have some problems with the gun.

1- slide didnt lock to the rear a few times, I blame a cheap Springfield magazine with weak spring.

2- near the end of the course of fire, the slide felt like it was slowing down. Which was expected because its very tight. Will apply more lube.
(eta: found out it was some of the thick parkerizing wearing off. Cleaned it and now works fine)

3- steel oil barrels aint so good to shoot at, lots of bounce backs

overall, pretty good

Best Thread On The Internet.

I loved your pics and descriptions. Informative.

Nobody would ever think to attempt such a build with anyithing else than a 1911.

Nice.

I like to build 1911's too.

I like the way it turned out.

I recently used gunKote Matte Gray on two retro AR projects.

Have you given any thought to checkering it?

Very nice.

This thread helped me out with my build, especially the part about the hammer and sear engagement.

I test fired mine today and had the same problem with the slide not holding open with one of my mags.  Other than that it was great.

Slide not locking open.  If it's not the mags, check the plunger.  Make sure the plunger tube is clean and lube the plunger.  Ensure the slide stop pin is not too tight in the frame or link.  Check barrel timing too.

Yep, thanks again W2R.  It turns out that it was a really tight slide stop and plunger not sliding correctly on the relatively rough finish.  Polished Slide stop where plunger contacts it and it locks back good now.

CCI Blazer 230gr walmart special, I think it can do better groups than I can.  I was standing isosceles with a Todd Jarret style grip, but I was amped up on coffee so I pulled a few to the right

This is a great thread.  I have had it saved for a while, and now that I am getting bored with AR's I think i might try to do something similar with a commander bobtail frame.  Does anyone know who makes that type of frame for this the build at home type????

You can follow my build Here.

I got the kit from them, so I didn't fit the slide and barrel.

Great job. I'm seriously considering trying the same but have a question, what was the over all cost and the cost broken down by tools, parts, ect?

page one 1200 on parts and tools, got it.

How did you keep the angle correct on rounding the slide on the rail side way back at the start?

On page 3 you sloped the slide edges of the bottom of the slide to 35deg by using slow passes with a dremel and then stoning flat.  How did you check your angle....

I printed this out, and eyeballed it against the print.

make slow even passes with the dremel, then I decked it with the diamond stone to make sure the corner I flattened was flat. Took a long time for sure, many hours. If you have a milling machine, this would take about 5 minutes if that.

I think it would work fine as a defensive weapon. But, I only have 50 rounds through it now so time will tell.

Gaspian,

This was a very informative thread. Your 1911 looks great and you really let us know what it is like to do a home build with home tools. I'm only recently getting my first 1911 although I've spent many days and nights with Glocks and ARs. I often thought of doing a project gun. One thing your thread has really stressed to me is to not jump in without having the right tools.

Great Job and Thanks
