Wife is asking what watch I want from Mrs. Santa.

I don't want a high dollar watch that will get torn up, this is about as fancy as I'd like

I want auto winding, and a timer bezel. It will end up with a NATO band on it.

Orient. I have a couple Vostoks. They look like they were made in Russia.

Mako in Blue or Pepsi.

Seiko and Orient (same company more or less) actually have lume that glows all night.

There’s something interesting about the quirky Vostok

the crappy but reliable 762x39 beater watch from CommieLand

my current favorite $39 Kommanderski

The overall quality and durability is going to be better with the Orient at around 150 to 200 bucks.

For 200 to 400 a Seiko Turtle or Citizen are your best auto diver buys.
They will have better Lume than the most entry level Swiss diver like a Glycine.

Once you go beyond that to 500 you get into Certina, Tissot, Mido, etc. Swiss auto divers.

The first one that I ever bought came straight from Moscow..

It came certified mail. the best part about that was going to pick it up at the post office.

The Orient is clearly a better watch. Better finishing, better movement.

However, I would 100% pick the Vostok between the two. At that price range, I'd rather have a quirky watch rather than try to get the most out of my money if that makes sense.

Love my Orient Ray2.
Spot on accuracy (after I sent it back for warranty work. Ran fast).

I've had more than a few Seiko SKX series, and all crapped out after the warranty ran out.

I picked up my vintage Vostok at gunshow 10yrs ago used for $40. The bracelet was trash but, has become a fun change of pace watch.  IMHO, the less modern case/dial designs are where Vostok shines. Embrace the scuba dude.

I'll tell mama you would like a Fortis. You won't be disappointed.

The Orient has a sapphire crystal.  The crystal durability is of paramount importance to me with a dive watch.  I like the looks of the Orient as well

Every Vostok I've owned has quit running but they are a neat cheap watch.

I've got over 20 Vostoks, love them, got a customized Amphibian on now, but the Orient is liable to be more reliable.

If you want to open 'em up and fuck with them though, Vostoks can be opened and resealed without worrying about affecting the waterproofing and are very easy to work on.  You can also get all manner of parts from Meranom cheap.  I think a movement was $35 last I checked.  You can also buy a watch and parts and have Vostok change the parts, I think it's $5 per part, and they'll include the old parts in the shipment.  I really like their bezel and caseback options, they can turn a rather pedestrian Amphib into something really nice.

Couple things off the top of my head about the Vostok in question..

The bezel turns free on them but that one's liable to be pretty tight and probably won't want to turn without effort.

The blue of the dial is going to be bright.  They aint shy about that.

I have small wrists and usually prefer the 420 or 720 round case to the 120 with its ears.  Had a 120 and gutted it for that reason.

The Amphibias are thick watches in general and stand pretty tall off the wrist. Compared to the Kommandierskie the crystal dome is even thicker and the caseback domes out to accommodate the autowinder.  Nato straps put a few layers of strap under that and stand them taller still.  The optional see-through caseback is even taller STILL.

The lume has gotten better over the years, still isn't wonderful, but that dial looks to be lumed usefully.  Some of their dials don't have pips on all the numbers for example, that one does.

You can't beat a no-date for an occasional wear Vostok either.  They don't quick-change so setting the date is a pain in the ass.

A lume pip on the seconds hand is a "necessary" hallmark of a dive watch so the user can tell if the watch is running in the dark.

The watch is basically an SKX007 clone, and is even ISO certified.

eta: actually it's an improvement with sapphire crystal, 300m WR, and helium valve.

Yep

She takes Dammed good care of me.

I wondered if the metal band would pull hairs or be unfomfortable.

I got it sized yesterday, it's really nice.

So glad I went with this, instead of the quirky commie watch

Orient makes great inexpensive watches. Vostoks are fun. It’s the perfect example of “Get Both”. You did well

BTW, you’re not a Vostok guy until you have Scuba Dude.
