When contractors were working on the Family Fare grocery store in Midland, they unexpectedly found a woman, 34, living inside the rooftop sign.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before in my career,” said Midland Police Department Public Relations Officer Brennon Warren of the April 23 finding at 2026 N. Saginaw Road.

The woman, who police nicknamed the "Rooftop Ninja," lived inside the store sign for about a year, Warren said. Inside her dwelling, she had a mini desk, flooring, a pantry of food and even a houseplant.

“She made it home,” Warren said.

Contractors discovered an extension cord on the roof and traced it to the dwelling inside the Family Fare sign.

“They were like ‘OMG, someone is living in that sign,’” Warren said.

When police became aware of the situation, officers told her she needed to find somewhere else to live. She was trespassed from the business. No criminal charges were filed against her. Officers offered the woman housing assistance and other resources. She declined their help. Police also believe she had a vehicle at her disposal.

The woman has a job, though she is not a Family Fare employee, Warren said. In addition, police said the store agreed to work with the woman to get her furniture down and back to her.

It always blows my mind how so many young homeless women are out there these days. Just imagine how many bridges a woman has to burn in order to fuck up that bad.

Why was she asked to leave?  I thought squatters have to be evicted?

Cops should be sued.  Play their same game to force a change in the law.

Yeah, honestly not bad. She lived somewhere rent free for a year and it sounds like she only got caught because they happened to need to work on the roof and found the extension cord. I hate squatters, but I definitely give her points for stealth and creativity.

It was probably the cheapest rent in the area.

Besides stealing power, it's hard to be mad at her if she wasn't causing a detriment to the business. I always thought big box stores should use roof space for condos anyway.

Lots of broken people out there.  From the story she seems better than some.  Can't help but be reminded of Red Wings #1 draft pick found living under a gas station sign a few years ago - yes drugs appear to have been involved if I remember correctly.

All you would have to do is tear every single one down and re-engineer them to support a second story.

I grew up in Midland.

Their cops and courts are so bipolar she could have either gotten a helping hand front Officer Friendly, or been branded Public Enemy #1 and buried under the jail by a furious judge.

She has no idea how lucky she was to have caught their cops on the right end of the mood swing.

When you're mentally ill and an alcoholic and/or drug addict then it doesn't take long. Not necessarily the issue here, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Almost all homeless people are mentally ill substance abusers.

In college I had a couple friends who worked the overnight shift at a "DeMoulas" supermarket in Massachusetts and they stumbled on someone living in the suspended ceiling and chased them out.

I knew of a homeless woman (student) at University of Florida back in the 80s. She had grown-up homeless and was very adept to the lifestyle. She had her hacks (what we would say today) for day to day living. Her tuition and books were paid fro through scholarships and financial-aid. She had the campus meal plan which fed her five days per week. On weekends, should would look for parties or, ironically, an apartment “open house” which usually offered free food. The campus gyms were available for showers. Eventually, she was able to find a gig sleeping in a construction trailer (office, with AC) at night in exchange for keeping an eye on the place.

She wasn’t super smart but did well in school because she would hang-out in one of the school libraries, studying, until they closed and threw her out. It is amazing how well you can do in school without the distractions of TV and partying every night.
