Either a dot or low magnification prism scope. One of the PA micro prism’s would probably serve well.

I was leaning toward the Holosun AEMS. Suggestions for others to look at?

For a similar optic with a lower mount, consider the 509t with a low pic rail adapter.

A PA x3 microprism would be a fun option

I went with a small Holosun with green.  (Red dots don’t work well for me)

I think it’s this one

I own lots of optics.

I think I would feel dirty putting one on a lever though.

I have a first gen 1x PA ACSS Cyclops on mine, pushed well beyond manufacturer specs, but still quite adequate for purpose.  But mine is a .357, and im not planning on taking 300 yard shots on game.  (But absolutely for shits and giggles)

I had a non-PA micro prism for about 3 days; the optical quality was horrific and the eyebox was shit, I sent it back.

I recently ditched my EXPS3-0 on a Unity mount for an AEMS on a Scalarworks mount. 13 oz vs 5oz and keep the reticle basically. Obviously you wouldn't want it that high, but the weight savings is worth it.

Williams foolproof peep sight.

I love lever guns and I love distance shooting but lever guns aren’t distance rifles. Optics ruin the lines and no matter how cool your lever gun might be, a scopes lever gun will never compete with a bolt gun for accuracy, or even a good semi-auto AR. And a scoped lever gun won’t handle as well as open or peep sights. Most optics are simply too high and ruin your cheek weld.

Show me a red dot that puts a dot ~1” higher than the bore, or less, and I’ll happily put one on a lever gun. Until then, no.

YMMV by a great deal. I said what I said.

I had a Aimpoint PRO on my Henry.  I ended up putting a TRS25 on there for a temp solution, and it has stayed on.  The TRS25 sits very low.  I would recommend it, but the newer ones. IMO. are not made as well as the older ones.  I'd pick up a used one for around $50 and try that out.

I did use a Holosun 407C for a bit.  It was okay but the viewing window was just too small for me to shoot and it needed to go on a pistol anyway.  make sure you get a pic rail adapter or a rail adapter to use on your rifle with the small dots like that.

Swampfox has doughnut of death options.

I have a Kingslayer as the offset sight on my Tavor.

Most of their current dot offerings now have multi-reticle, which includes the doughnut.

Still love my eotech's though.

I've tried a few setups but lately I've been stuck on a Romeo 5 on the X-357 and a Leup 2-7 on the 30/30. When I get the 45-70 I want it'll get a 1-6 PST II or similar.

You've got a pretty good choice for a dot setup in mind though.

LPVO....

Why would you consider a red dot for a 45-70? It is not a pistol caliber carbine, it is a hunting cartridge. That's like putting a red dot on a 30-06.

RMR. Many animals and men has been put down with an open sights on a lever gun. Red dots are fastest to get on target and just as accurate.

I got the gun this weekend.  I thought maybe CompM5 but this works too even though it's sort of too big.  I sure do like the big tube on the CompM4 though.

edit - get the mount they call 'LRP' which works fine without the spacer installed, for mounting the CompM4 low on guns where you're not trying to co-witness with AR sights

For the Henry X, I've tried a few, including EoTech and Primary Arms prism, Romeo 5, other red dots and stuck with a Holosun 507C X2. Small and low profile, just seems right.

I may switch it to a LPVO, but not in a hurry.

Fast target acquisition on a thumper of a hunting rifle is a specific type of capable, lightweight joy-bringer.

Heres some nice both-eyes-open optics on my .308 Mini-G Garand.  The Burris Scout optic did the job, but it handles so well without an optic that I decided to put an H1 on there.  It's magic.

There's nothing wrong with optics on levers. I had a 1.5-5x20 on a win 94 ae 25 years ago.

If the lion's share of shooting is sub 200 yards, a fixed 3 or 4 gets it done.

I think the dot will be a better approach. Depending on how far forward you plan to mount it you could definitely consider a magnifier to use for hunt where the expectation is a further shot.

If I'm walking, I prefer the X .357 with dot to the 30/30 with scope at 2x personally.

I have a PA 1-4x on my 45-70.  I have rung steel at 500 yards, and shot a deer at 50 yards with it.

I’d go LPVO

A Steiner P4xi would be a good LPVO. Maybe even a PA 1-6 Nova. Both bright dots and quick on 1x, then have some mag if you have time to dial.

so, OP is going to be staying with the exact same load, constantly?
45-70 can have some very nasty curves, at different ranges- 325 VTX from Hornady shows a +5.5" RISE at 100, dead 0 at 200, and - 23inches at 300 yds.  405 gr gets even moar entertaining...
something to consider that everyone seems to be overlooking...
