I need a new garlic press, which one is the preferred model?
Also, what about cheese graters? Olive Garden type plastic ok or are there better ones out there? Where is Thorazine when you need him? Thanks! Indy |

I have had the Zyliss garlic press going on 5 years now.
As a household we go through about 3 pint jars of garlic cloves a month. Vampires stand no chance. linky eta... speaking of cheese graters... olive garden actually uses zyliss. they will actually sell you one so I've heard per the grams'. |

One option
Tier one? I don't know. I went looking for the simplest, most durable, stainless garlic press I could find about a year ago. This is what I came up with. It's worked fine for me, but it's not exactly what I had in mind when I started... Good luck, and let us know what you decide on. |

+1 Zyliss
But then again... I think I'd upgrade to the Dreamfarm Garject if I was buying now. |
|
But then again, I just need to get my post count up.

I had cheap Chinese made ones in the past. One day while waiting for my wife in Marshall’s I see a Swiss made Zyliss brand and I scooped it up.
Heaven sent. It’s over 10 years old now and I love it. |

Do you bother to remove the green core from the cloves? |

No opinion on cheese graters. I love my Pampered Chef garlic press.

Aimless is south, I'm up by SLC. Ye don't mess with the green parts, they're no good. But we go thru so much garlic we just buy the pound tub at the local Asian market about once a month or 2 or so, it's already peeled. Garlic will stay fresh (whole cloves) in the fridge if it is submerged in oil. Which is a double bonus because the oil gets flavored and you can also use that while cooking. |

I've owned a good half-dozen or so garlic presses over the years, and I eventually settled on this one:
I've owned it for 4 years, which I think is a personal record. While it's the "best" one I've personally used to date, I really think that I just don't fancy garlic presses that much. More often than not, I seriously just use my chef's knife. If I want them really finely minced, I just smash them with the knife, then do a fast rocking chop. Doneski. I really only reach for the press, when I need like an entire bulb of the stuff (rare for me). Otherwise, it's honestly just as quick for me to use the knife I already have out anyway. And if I count cleanup, I'm actually faster with the knife. For graters, I have four total - Two Rösles, and two Microplanes
I have one for coarse grating, and one for medium grating, These babies are Tier 1, straight baller, awesome. I prefer this style to a box grater, but that's a personal preference. Point is, they're sharp as hell (and STAY that way), and absolutely have not corroded even one little bit, in the three years I've owned them. And I toss them in the dishwasher every time, because the hell with handwashing a cheese grater. Both still have a mirror finish. I don't know if these are "Lifetime" graters, but I suspect they will be. Or real close to it. For fine grating (and zesting), I have two of these (one wide, and one narrow):
These are widely regarded as the gold standard, and my own experience backs that up. And circling back to your garlic press question, these are what I use when I want a garlic paste. |

Rocker press does the silicone roller thing for removing the peel work? That said, mine mostly just sit in the drawer. I've become so quick at it over the years just using the side of my knife (light smash, then peel the paper right off), that using the roller thing is kind of a wash, time and effort-wise. I already have the knife out anyway, so it's one less thing to rinse off. But mostly, I keep forgetting I have the silicone things in the drawer. These are the ones I have, in case you're curious:

I was raised with the Zyliss, sort of a pain to clean and made from aluminum that oxidizes, maybe they're different now.
I use Rosle now, can't imagine a better one. Looks like the current one has a built in scraper, I use an older version. |

The y key to a garlic press is not how it presses garlic that's simple. It's how easy it is to clean. I generally mince garlic because I hate cleaning the press so much. Thanks for the link to the roller I will give it a try.

Pampered Chef.
I have one that is 17 years old and is still great. It shows wear but works perfectly. |
