Steve Albini dead at 61 (Page 1 of 2)

[Last Edit: SamBoga]

Steve Albini, an icon of indie rock as both a producer and performer, has died of a heart attack, staff at his recording studio, Electronic Audio, confirm to Pitchfork. As well as fronting underground rock lynchpins including Shellac and Big Black, Albini was a legend of the recording studio, though he preferred the term "engineer" to "producer." He recorded Nirvana's In Utero, Pixies' Surfer Rosa, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me, and countless more classic albums, and remained an outspoken critic of exploitative music industry practices until his final years. Shellac were preparing to tour their first album in a decade, To All Trains, which is scheduled for release next week. Steve Albini was 61 years old.

Damn, RIP. He recorded a lot of great bands over the years. One of the more interesting engineers in the business.

RIP

Besides producing many classic albums, he was the guy who demonstrated how major labels took advantage of artists. The labels made millions, the artists, nothing.

Be sure and read his famous Nirvana producer pitch letter from '93(?) or so.  He was not a bull-shitter.

Never heard of the dude and I don't know who you're referring to with CC, but the dead dude was probably vaxxed.

Sucks, seemed like a good dude.  Charged a flat fee for producing a record instead of a percentage.  Remember playing big black on campus radio.

I still remember the shock of hearing Songs About Fucking when it was released in 1987. It was intense.

From the liner notes:

It was that kind of album. Highly recommended if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah he was solid, only 61 I believe. No drinking, no drugs he was all in with the music.  He was about to drop an album and start a tour with a project side band.  He was really a fantastic sound guy. If it was not for him, I don't think we would have gotten as good a follow up of Nevermind with the Nirvana album In Utero as we did. I was shocked to read this news this morning.

I've got the Pig Pile VHS with the clear single stashed somewhere.

I was just a country boy from Iowa when I started exploring this shit.  It was shocking and I loved it.

Big Black was Flipper with a drum machine.

That would be funny if his posts didn't add more value than just about anyone else in GD.
And if he wasn't smarter than most of us.

Literally was just thinking of Steve today. The man was an interesting character. His interviews all over YouTube got me thinking of him differently than what I thought of him back in the Big Black days.

Songs About Fucking and the Rich Man's Eight Track Tape were two of the best albums of my teenage years.  Found him through his music, read a lot about his recording work and his studio.. Some of the Shellac shit is awesome, a lot of it is probably more technically than musically brilliant but....I'm really fucking sad about this.  I was actually talking to my nephew about trying to get his band recorded at Electrical Audio.

Steve Albini was a warrior monk of independent music.  His politics were crap but I bet he was shitty at a lot of things that weren't music.  I miss him already.  Him and his crazy band of Chicago lunatics will always be a bulwark of my playlists.

I'll hit you with a wrench.

If making a record takes more than a week someone fucked up.

Dude had a no BS philosophy to production.  He could have negotiated royalties, but he didn't want that to interrupt the process.  He knew he would make it up on the back end.

He was a Chicago guy.  Our paths crossed when I worked venues in Chicago.  It was decades before I realized he did In Utero.

Whitehouse reinvented themselves (for the much better) with the help of Steve.  I would love to know the details of those initial meetings, wouldn't surprise me if it was all his idea.

Besides being an amazing producer, he also was a very good poker player.

Albini was an avid poker player and ranked in 12th place at the 2013 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Seniors Championship.[96] Albini won his first WSOP gold bracelet at the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud at 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP); he beat out Jeff Lisandro to win $105,629.[97] He won his second gold bracelet at the 2022 WSOP in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event.[98]

You ever read the lyrics to a Big Black album? Listened to one?!

I don't actually think he was a pedophile.  Or a wife beater.  Or a murderer.  I don't think he huffed kerosene.  Pretty sure he never drove a truck.

Dude's followup band was called Rapeman after a particularly sick rape fantasy comic series in Japan.
