It looks like the monstrous sandworms depicted in Dune, but this blood-sucking 'vampire fish' and its mouth full of swirling teeth are all too real.

Will Miles, 26, encountered the bizarre creature on the beach near Exmouth Marina in Devon while taking a post-work stroll last week.

He said: 'It was very noticeable, lying in the centre part of the beach near the tideline – I was on a walk after work.

'It was like a hugely oversized leech with a sucker full of sharp, inward-pointing teeth.'

The creature is a sea lamprey – a species known for sucking the blood of their prey; hence the 'vampire fish' nickname.

I handled live ones once. It was in Manchester, NH at "meet a lamprey" event at the local fish ladder.

They are very muscular and exude slime when stressed. I suppose that makes sense as their relatives are hagfish, which I have also handled at the Isles Of Shoals research facility.

The amount of slime they can produce is shocking (small hagfish filling a 5 gallon pail).

Back in the good old days Lampreys were considered good table fare. They were called "Derryfield Beef" (Derryfield was the old name for Manchester, NH).

They are an example of evolutionary success- their ancestors were sliming about in the ?Silurian? or Devonian at the latest. 450 million years or so is certainly not shabby.

Saw what looked like a lamprey attached to a sucker fish on a small river in north central WI.

Tried to capture that fish, but failed.  Therefore I can’t be sure it was what I thought it was.  Didn’t know they’d be that far inland on this tiny river system.  Figured if I were to capture it someone at the DNR might have been interested in it.  This was 30-some years ago now.

My mom told a story of growing up on an inland lake in NY. She was swimming with her sisters and came out of the water with a sea lamprey attached to her back. One of her brothers pulled it off, but not before it cut her up.

I think the state introduced a toxin that affects lamprey so they’re not as abundant in the lake any longer. I’ve never seen one in 30-something years at the lake.

This. Been a thing in lake champlain forever. There was a time that the LCI derby would give you a spool of fishing line if you brought one in when you weighed a fish.

At that same time you couldn't catch a laker or a salmon that either had one on it or had a scar from where one was.

NY has done a decent job of getting rid of them.
