I am looking for the thread that was recent of the Arfcom member in Texas who imported what I think was a Hilux Surf

It's not about if you win or lose. It's about how many rules they have to add afterwards. |

So, gonna guess it's TxLawDog My JDM Hilux Is Here *Fuel Milege Update* **Got Screwed Pg 5** Discussion ForumsJump to Quoted PostQuote History Quoted: Quoted: Wouldn't be concerned, if maintained A340 w 50k shouldn't be an issue for quite a bit KZ tho - Coolant leaks create overheats so need to pay attention there. The OEM heads are pretty infamous for cracking. Nice truck OP just keep an eye on coolant - assuming you've seen the protocols for KZ cooling system @Alacrity - Glad to see you show up in this thread. I pay attention to your knowledge on these things. I will replace the radiator with an aluminum 3 row for the Surf. I also ordered a 71 degree C thermostat to replace the stock 88 degree model. This one has no radiator leaks and the hoses are fresh. I downloaded and read the KZ manual that Toyota put out. I know that poorly maintained KZ's can be a hot mess (no pun intended). @TxLawDog Have a fair bit of practical KZ (Mostly mechanical -T) experience, and pay attention to peeps who have a lot more. I've listened to the kvetching and speculation for over 20 years. No expert tho, and zero KZN185 experience, so fair warning. Those are all good steps. My take is, and this has been reinforced by some gents that should have a good handle, issues stem from two main use patterns. Long duration high rpm op (100-120 kph+) speed and heavy work load (trailering/hauling/mountain ascents). Low and relatively slow doesn't seem to create issues, (might heat soak your IC if you crawl for a bit). In environments 30-35C, I'd watch temps esp under load or at high rpm's. My view is both -T and -TE suffer from similar cooling system deficiencies, but mitigated over time (you can follow the part number supercessions) and exacerbated by use mentioned earlier. Im sure you baselined all the fluids (apologies if I missed), just keep an eye on the coolant level. I check regularly and watch for signs, make sure the fan works (I'd be inclined to change out a 25 year old fan-clutch to the current part number). Note the cooling temp now and act if there's an increase. Leaks can also be internal. If I was doing anything heavy or travel I'd likely install EGT. Head cracking is likely sub materials, thin design margins, and "overheating" - which doesn't mean redlining on the factory coolant garage. I believe it's avoidable. The IC is good to see, and front mount suggested is cool, but there's adv to either. Do you know the status of the timing belt? If changed should be a notation in engine compartment. I'd run lubricity additive - FoxtrotXX has ran this down before but I can't recall details. FWIW I think the earlier the run, the more likely the issue. I've been told there were meaningful "tweaks" as the KZ matured. Also doubt your truck saw anything worse than prolonged idling in the weekend traffic. As long as the fan is fully op, I'd expect it to be fine. GL man looks like a nice truck. You have a handle on parts, but if you need something immediate, many of the LC specialists States or Europe will have OEM or Genuine Parts stocked. To address one comment: There's shit JDM examples - Shaken isn't fool proof. But no you don't see many sub 4 or S3 ratings. |
