Little dude was found by one of our superintendants. I being the critter guy went and took him out of the work area.

I know he is some flavor of rat snake, and I am leaning toward corn snake, but can someone in Georgia ( caught in Athens ) give me a more definitive answer on what kind of king copper  cobrattler cottonmoccasin it is.

It’s a beautiful kind of snek is what it is!

That looks like every juvenile Eastern Black Rat snake I've ever come across, but I'm no expert. All the ones I've handled were extremely feisty!

he's a good one

Hope you let him out to eat more vermin.

Well it looks as if it's venomous and you've been bit cause your skin is changing color.

Also looks like he's been chewing on your finger nails.

RIP OP.

Definitely a moccacobracopperrattler. My grand pappy said they chase you down and laugh maniacally while biting and injecting venom that takes down generations of children.

Looks like a little rat snake to me.

Same.  I'm not expert enough to tell when they are that young.  It could grow into anything from dark black to bright yellow.

Not sure if it applies where you are...

But in VA, round eyes are non venomous,  cats eyes are.  There may be one exception of a locally rare coral snake.

You don’t have to get that close to tell this snake isn’t venomous.

Never assume that.  If it's bright out, yeah, maybe.  If it's not that bright out, that can get you in trouble.  It's best to learn what species of snakes in your area are hot and not.  If you're not sure, leave them alone and admire them from a distance.

You'd think this is a safe snake to play with just by the eyes but I took this shot in lower light and his pupils are dilated.  This is Buzz Butt, my western diamondback rattlesnake...

About 10 inches.  He is one of my pets.  And he was in his enclosure.  I photographed through the glass.  I'm not particularly worried about him striking at me as he's super chill but I still don't take the chance.  He's the one snake I have that I don't free handle.

To add to this, if you are close enough to see pupils, your identification of a hot will be too late.

I am pretty solid on my snake identification skills as far as general type of snake in the CONUS and am 100% solid on venomous/non- venomous. ( knew the little guy was a rat snake, just not the specific type)

When I travelled out of country for work, I did not put my hands on any snakes. Just assumed all would light me up.

No shit! Never mind that taking care of the snake allows 10 other babies to get back to working, but OP is lollygagging.

Having seen some of Hard_Rock's photography gear, he could have been on the other side of the state and gotten that shot.

LOL.  I've been closer with many of my snakes.  Some of these had the lens in contact with the snake or my hands were when I took the shots.

Nice high res snake photos. My favorites are the bright colored vipers if you got any of those. They look truly satanic up close.
