When did it become illegal to make private sales to out of state Americans?

Gun Control Act of 1968.  Yes, 1968.

Really? I thought all private sales only required buyer to not be a convict.

Any transfer out of state has to go through a FFL and it’s been that was for 56 years now

It's your property, sell it however, to whoever you like.

Stop complying with the bullshit.

Just to be clear and helpful and not try to confuse OP.

Lately the ATF has made a big push to try to limit face to face transactions between common people saying they are "in the business of selling firearms" and they want to make it illegal without going through an FFL or having one yourself.

This is their push to require an FFL/background check for private sales.

As long as the two residents live in the same state and neither are felons then go on about your business.
Tazaroo is right, if the sale crosses state lines then you need an FFL.

which is fine advice as long as you are willing to accept that the law has a contradictory opinion and if they decide to interject in your private transaction you will need to fight it and their budget far exceeds your own.

Im not saying dont, im just saying make sure you understand the consequences for ignoring the king.

Hi Mr. ATF man, how are you this morning?

This is pretty much the 11th commandment.  "Thou shall not sell thy guns across state lines."
