Took her grocery shopping. When we got back inside the house, I heard a big thud. She had fallen and couldn't get up. It was too painful when we tried to help her up. 911 called.

They take her to the ER and xrays confirm she fractured a hip. The guy telling us this (xray tech maybe) stressed a standard fracture. I took that to mean cracked, but not separated (compound).

She's 90 years old and up till now had little problem getting around.

Orthopedic guy just left. Going to do surgery in the morning. Not a full hip replacement. A titanium rod in her femur to reconnect the ball to the bone.

Prayers up for your blessed mother.  May the Lord provide her strength and comfort during this trial.  Speedy recovery.

Not uncommon procedure and patients are frequently of very advanced age.

If she isn’t on blood thinners they will likely but not always choose to do a spinal for it. She will be super numb and the. They add a little sedation.
But we also frequently put people to sleep for it.

May God keep you strong

No blood thinners. Ortho man told her they were putting her all the way out.

She's going on 91 and this is her first broken bone. Pretty good record I guess.

My mom is about 30 years younger than yours. She tripped and fell last Fall and broke her left hip/femur (Intertrochanteric hip fracture). She couldn't even breathe without feeling the pain until they hit her fentanyl and 800mg Tylenol for approx 24 hours before her general anesthesia surgery. I'm not trying to scare you or anything, but the attending surgeon and staff wouldn't stop telling me how 'lucky' she was, since a hip fracture among senior adults, mainly in the age your mom is at, consistently leads to critical events. Good luck, amigo, and I pray God watches over your mother.

She's 90 and that's amazing. Not much more you can do.

Our predecessors are much more badass than we are. Ain't no shame in trying fix her so she can show us once again.

Best of luck to her.

Have her do some heavy breathing exercises, slow and deep in, hold it for a few seconds and all the way out.  A few minutes every hour while she is laid up.  Otherwise she may get atelectasis then pneumonia.

Stayed at the hospital all night. Got a couple of hours sleep in the most uncomfortable recliner ever designed in between people coming in for various reasons.

They gave her some pain medication about 3am, and she finally is sleeping well.

Someone, a Dr I presume,  came in just after 6am to update us (me, since mom snored through it) and says her surgery will be this afternoon, unless another OR becomes available.

She is out of surgery.  Surgeon says she did very well. Should be back in her room from recovery in about 30 minutes.

Thanks everyone.
