What would you all put on a .22 rifle? I’m thinking a 2-7x32 of some sort or maybe a 1-6x24. 3-9x40 are more plentiful but I’d like to keep it fairly compact.

I figure a 22 is only good under 100 yards for accurate shots. It’s going on a Marlin Papoose that’s why I’d like something compact. Figure I’d put quick release rings on it as well.

I have a 2-7x32(ish?) Vortex Diamondback Rimfire on a .17HMR and it’s been a great hunting optic. Busted many tree rats with it. If it was primarily a target rifle I’d want more scope but for hunting it’s just right.

Hawke Vantage IR Rimfire.  I LOVE their reticle.  They offer high velocity and sub-sonic versions.  I was actually just shooting steel at 200 yards with mine last week.  The 3x can be a little much if you're squirrel hunting and one pops up at 10 or 15 yards, but on the flipside, when there's a squirrel at 50 yards, the 9x is really nice.

I am a big fan of 1-6s in general.

I use them on my ARs out to 500.

I think a 1-6 on a .22 would be PDC especially for a 25yd shot or something if you were hunting small game.

I have a mix.

Irons only:

Solid irons with an inexpensive RDS

And a CZ 452 FS with a Trijicon Credo HX 1-4 with green dot:

That CZ is largely a companion trainer to my CZ 527 5.56 rifle that wears a similar Accupoint 1-4.

They're not "distance" guns, so I don't try to make them into LR shooters.  And honestly, I shoot the 39A with irons more than the rest of them.  And I have a CZ 452 "trainer" with a 24" barrel and irons only, which feels like cheating on the range.

Reading just this post so far it depends on the purpose of use and the style of rifle.

I have a Mannlicher stocked .22 with a 1.5-5x that I shoot squirrels with.,  another 452 FS shooter, it’s stupidly accurate, more so than the 452 varmint
I have a general purpose .22 bolt gun with a 3-9x32
I have a varmint barrel .22 with a 4-18x
I have a heavy barrel 40x with a 6-24

Red dot

Small Primary arms prisms

Fixed power scope

Don’t see the point of having a light weight packable 22 then putting a large heavy variable scope on it

Inside 100yds a Japan Weaver 1-3x is great, love mine, great balance on the gun. A Leupold 1.5x4 or 5 should be nice too and still lightweight. A PA 1-6x 22 reticle is good too but these are heavier.

They can easily go out to 200. 300 is not uncommon. It sounds like a 1-6 would be great for your application.

I have a Weaver 4x on my trusty M44. I don't see the reasoning behind a variable on a .22 unless it is a .22 magnum.

I have a Rossi Rio Bravo that i am going to put a Leupold VX freedom 2-7×32 with the rimfire moa reticle on.   I wanted something light but good for that rifle and at 11.1 oz that fits the criteria perfectly.   Ive looked through one at a local shop and the glass seemed pretty good.  Ive taken that rifle out to 300 yards with the fiber optic sights that it has on it from the factory and made hits on the target.

what DickStar said.

22LR will go much further than 100 yards, and fun to take it out further

.22lr has a lot of drop within 100 yards.  If you want accurate shots, you'll want the ability to dial elevation, or at least a reticle that will let you hold over.

I have 6-24 scopes with FFP reticles on my .22 rifles.  They were set up for NRL22.  But the same system that gets you accurate shots in competition will work in the field.

Leupold VX freedom series are good.

The Sightron S1 hunter 3x9 is also a excellent rimfire scope and cheaper than Leupold.

Both run $180-240 but worth it.

Rimfire drives you to a scope with a very short minimum focus distance.  Many centerfire scopes don't focus below 50 yards, which is too far away.  This is so important, use the minimum focus distance as a criteria to filter out unacceptable scopes.

If it were mine, I'd get this - Leupold 3-9X40mm AO EFR (adjustable objective, extended focal range), $400

Marlin Papoose?  cool little gun!

Personally I’d consider fiber optic iron sights.

That said a 1-5x or a straight 4x or something like that.

Lots of used ones on eBay. People pay good $$ for them tho.

I had a 10/22 with a Sightron 3-9x32 rimfire on it that I like. Need to pick up another. Under $200, not made in China.

I second this.

The Simmons 4x32 .22 is actually pretty decent for what it cost.

If spending money on a decent scope, I try to get adjustable objective focus or parallax adjustment. Otherwise, something designed as a rimfire scope where
Parallax is set to 50-60yd
