What are you guys planting this year?

I'm going to get some seeds started in late February.

Not sure yet. But I have one jalapeno plant that is two years old and another that seems to be surviving from last year. Never knew they would keep going until last year.

Looks like 6 of my pepper plants will survive for another year.  I started my seeds on 1/01/23.  Looking to have 12 plants this year.

"Regular" Jalapenos and Harbeneros are cheap and readily avaliable around here so I am growing other varieties.

Cowhorns (2)
Chocolate harbeneros
Serranos
Sweet banannas (2)
Purple jalapanos
Lemon spice jalapenos
Cayenne (2)
Big Thai
Harbenero (2)
Red Ghost (2)

I got a whole bunch from last year that still have green stems we'll see if they go again. Planted some more cayenne and anaheims.

I highly recommend the Chiltelpin ones. They're the only native pepper to the United States and are fantastic in cooking

There is still snow on top of my greenhouse, and the garden is a blanket of white.  Just a tad early to think about peppers.

But I'll tag this thread for some good ideas on varieties.

I've been experimenting with wintering poblanos indoors with pretty good success.   I've got a two and a half year old tabasco pepper plant that's mostly dormant by my sliding door that I think will make it at least another season.  They look like hell but come spring and more light and water it's amazing how much the leaves come back.

I'm going to get my grow lamps setup this weekend and start some Serranos, Bells, Corbaci, Wax and Jalapeno. I did some Poblano last year, but find Serrannos to be more versatile in cooking.

A very light pepper I am a HUGE fan of for general usage (it's warm, not hot, just delicious) is the Jimmy Nardello pepper. This thread reminded me, I need to grow some Nardellos.

Need to plant a bunch this year because we use a lot of pepper powder and also I am out of hot pepper wine, which is a great cooking wine and really not that bad to sip on occasion.  Planting cayenne, jalapeno, ghost, chile de arbol (I make and can a nice salsa with those and my paste tomatoes), serrano, Hungarian wax, two types of peppers that I have named fat and thin and have no idea what they are but they are fairly hot, one or two bell plants, and probably some other medium heat ones depending on what seeds I have saved in my box.

Planting my first garden this year, and had no idea you were supposed to start pepper plants indoors early. Guess year one we’ll get to see if they’ll come up from seed in the the Houston area.

ETA: was planning on planting jalapeño, serrano, banana, bell, habanero and pepperoncini

Arguing about guns and other stuff we all like is like 40% of why I come here.

Both of you have decent ideas except wax and bell. Bell peppers are so stupid I hate them. They are the worst.

"Hello I'm a pepper with zero heat and the least amount of flavor"

Anything done with a bell pepper can be done better with a hot pepper. And I'm not saying every pepper must melt your face off but I mean come on with these bell peppers

I start them indoors early because I live in the frozen wasteland and if I try to start them outdoors they will never mature in time to bear fruit before the frost comes in fall.

Houston is probably a different story, but if you start them indoors early you will probably have a much longer harvest than if you start them outdoors.

I have a similar kit with a heating mat and a grow light it works great.

Just remember to introduce them to the outside in stages. You can also introduce them to wind with a small oscillating fan

thai chili?

Tabasco.

I think 5 years. He has a picture of like a 8 year old habanero or a scotch bonnet that legit has a tree trunk with bark.(imagine the regular bark like scarring you get on a pepper but 8 years worth) must have been a 3 inch wide stalk

We like to eat red bell pepper fresh sliced. Goes well chopped up in a salad.

Not everything needs to be spicy to be good.

The grocery store closest to us has a flame griller setup outside with hatch peppers from time to time. They are awesome.
