I first started seeing signs of F1 online at University in England in 1995; it was a news site of some sort but it would be ~3yrs  before it was a primary source. There was also a Yahoo F1 group that makes this one look tame...

Prior to that, it was the back page of the newspaper on the Monday morning, and weekly Autosport. I used to follow Giorgio Piola's tech drawings with great interest; I can still tell what time of season certain features came in when I see photographs. I never followed it that closely in the internet era, although Piola is still going strong.

I loved AutoWeek,  I was pissed when they went to the magazine format,  I loved the news paper style.

Remember all the for sale ads in the back,  Ford RS200s for $5K.

There was an AtlasF1.com forum back then. It ended up getting bought out by Autosport and rolled into their website, maybe around mid 2000's?
But I was on that forum at least as far back as '97.

edit: Wild. Looks like they still maintain a nostalgic link  to the homepage, although most of the links are dead. lol.

That was a tough period if you weren't a Ferrari fan. Although 2000 & 2003 were really great years.

The Varsha Matchett Hobbs combo was the best ever. I get a kick out of hearing Varsha occasionally doing Barrett Jackson auctions

Bandini? God that was awful. I've seen the footage of them picking him up off the asphalt after putting out the fire, and he looks like a clump of seaweed.

I disagree.  I sucks seeing someone hit / forced off and then being out of the race.  Even if it is the fault of the driver's that goes off, seeing their race end instead of trying to come back sucks.

That is when I started.  It is a shame Fox ruined the channel.

I loved when Dutch Mandel wrecked a 308, that was around 80-81.
Denise McCluggage had great articles, the radar jammers in the back section, Escape Road......
I learned about so many obscure cars just by reading the classifieds.
It all changed when they took the old-time racing helmet logo away.

If it works and races or sessions don't get red flagged I'm all for it. I wonder how pitstops will work?

Couple thoughts...
- Not much of a test on a dry track, is it?
- Those are one of the ugliest appendages I've ever seen tacked onto a racecar.
- Another step away from the whole "open cockpit/open wheel" tradition. Why not just clothe
them in some sort of Hypercar style bodywork? At least that would look good.
- We all know that F1 doesn't race in the rain anymore. Anything more than a fine drizzle and they're setting up tent city in the pit lane.

Perhaps they are trying to armor up the cars to protect them from Perez, Logan and Lance?

I guess they'll get some nice data about how it affects wake management. It'll probably make the cars quicker in the dry. I agree about it being silly though. They're starting to look more like prototypes.

This all looks a bit design-by-committee and although that's a big part of the current regulation doctrine I don't think this is the right direction at all.

It looks like they are doing a decent job with moving some of the spray out and low.  No matter what you do with the tires, the underbody of the cars is going to let out huge spray from the diffuser

The best I have seen is the one I posted with the car behind being without the spray guards.  There are a few more images in the set of photos, I found them here: Spray Guard Testing Photos

These cars are extremely modular. They can bolt on new things very easily.

Designing and construction is the challenge.

@Aaron_Krafft

A new engine cover and rear wing as well and a new front wing too.

So combined with the new floor really a whole new car

I don’t recall the specifics, but they only cared about Dakar which the FIA made part of a series. They were getting fined fairly heavily for missing all of the other races.

No F1 this weekend, but don't forget that WEC has the 6 hours of Spa tomorrow,
Moto GP is at Le Mans on Sunday and IMSA is at Laguna Seca.

Plenty of petrol fumes to keep gearheads happy this weekend.

Also, I know it's on Motortrend+ which is cheap (less than a cup of coffee each month), or at the very least they probably have a trial membership
for new subscribers.

edit: looks like Motortrend+ has been rolled into discovery+, but yes, WEC is still available.
