Alright guys how bad is Meniscus knee surgery and recovery going to suck? I have a significant tear in my right knee. Thanks

It’s not bad. I had a meniscus tear repaired a few years ago along with a popliteal cyst (Baker’s cyst) removed from my right knee a few years ago. The meniscus involved two incisions at the front of the knee. The Baker’s cyst removal from the back of the knee was more involved.
My leg was wrapped from upper thigh to foot for a couple of weeks. Had to walk on crutches. |

Based on my experience not having surgery and my wife having surgery, surgery is probably a better route...

It is not too bad. I have had three. Do the therapy, start it as soon as the doctor recommends, and you will be as good as new (almost) in about six weeks. Afterwards, it helps to keep the supporting muscles strong.

I'll be the voice of dissent. I had a meniscal tear in my right knee about 15 years ago, had the torn portion removed (surgeon said mine couldn't be repaired) and it was a bit over a year before it stopped hurting, and a couple of years before I had what I considered a truly good range of motion in the flexed position without pain. And yes, I did the rehab like prescribed. But I've got a pretty active/hard lifestyle and profession, so that's likely a contributor.
About a month ago, I started having the same pains when weight-bearing in the flexed (squat) position, and pretty sure it's torn again. I just injected it with PRP last week, so I'll see if that helps before I go to the doctor and have it checked out. But it's a pretty recognizable feeling, so I bet I'll be back in surgery if I want it to heal. |

Recovery isn’t bad. Local pain at the repair site and discomfort for a couple days. It’ll be tender and you’ll protect/ favor it for a week or so, even though you don’t have to. Jump on your PT RIGHT AWAY and follow through with it 100%.
You’ll be moving around normally in a couple weeks. Good as new not long after. I was rucking 7 miles 3 weeks after my last one. (Probably not the best of ideas  , but no lingering issues).It’ll randomly get a little sore and remind you that you had the procedure. It’s more annoying than painful. Kinda like you want to shake your foot because you want your knee to crack. No big deal compared to other muscle/ tendon/ ligament surgeries. Rotator cuff surgeries on the other hand… |

Tore mine at the end of 2021. Doc didn't even consider surgery. I lasted about a month in PT until I felt recovered.
I have occasional very minor pain, but I have arthritis in both knees. Count me as a vote to skip surgery since all they do is cut out the torn part of your meniscus. No surgery means you just have a tear. Neither is ideal. Look into Ben Patrick, the Knees Over Toes Guy. |

Doc had mine done in about 30 minutes.
Recovery was smooth. Did therapy for a couple weeks. |

Was supposed to get the surgery along with the removal of a bakers cyst three or so years ago. I started wearing a brace. stopped bothering me. Have yet to have the surgery. Feel fine now, still hike, hunt & walk without pain. If it is not bothering you that bad I would other things first.

Had it and wished I’d had it done a couple years before then. About 30-45 minutes and doc was done. Wrapped in cotton and ace bandages from nuts to ankle. Kept it on 2 days. Off work 3 days. Doc told me after 7 days to cut my stitches out because he was going on vacation.

Mine wasn’t to bad. Had to be easy on it for a little. They said I could do things like I used to. That wasn’t so true. I can, but it gets sore when I do. But when I had my problems it bothered me when I was trying to sleep, or sitting. When I was moving it wasn’t as bad. It was nice not having my knee waking me up when I bent it to far or to straight.

I had a tear repaired on my right knee as am outpatient (got a friend to drive me home). Was only hobbled for about a week, but wasn't really back for a month. Not really a bad experience, and glad I did it.

I could probably use a new knee For OP's issue, cleaning out the knee doesn't always go well. Many return for further work, and I know someone who had a knee replacement. |

Had most of my left lateral meniscus removed some years back. Doctor wanted me up and walking on a crutch about for hours after surgery. Used the crutch until the first follow-up. Then it was just slowly building back to normal with PT and exercise. Total slow down time was maybe six weeks, none of it not walking.

1st night when the pain meds they injected into the knee wore off it was pretty bad. Ice helped me alot and walking too.

48 hours after mine I was on a boat fishing. A week later I was running.
It's not a big deal at all. Recovery is very fast. Have it on a Friday, back to work on Monday. |
