I finally got a 'A4 the other year, and am kicking myself in the ass for not getting one sooner. What a soft shooting rifle.

Agree.  If parts are correct/decent quality they will keep shooting so damn nice after you should have changed out consumable parts in a carbine length gas system.  Both military configuration barrels balance superb and are a joy to carry.  The HBAR profile seems very unweildy though.

I don't need this but it would be cool. Have a carry handle and probably a Anderson stripped lower laying around

Had a 20 inch  armalite for years til last year i built a 10.5.I like the 20 its a smooth shooter and very accurate. The sbr is nice for closer stuff no doubt i can hot steel with it to 200 yards but doubt the bullet is effective as the 20 inch.

20" is a great length for anything over 300m. I opted for an 18" with rifle gas.

I am not volunteering to stand down range while even a 5” barrel is pointing at me so get whatever you want. It all shoots and can be deadly.

No, you don't.

I mean they're cool and I have several, but I'd always recommend a 14.5" (or shorter) barrel, especially if you're only going to have one AR.

Unless you have that one AR to do service rifle matches with. That'd be different, obviously. Then you'd want extra weight and a longer sight radius. (Sight radius is irrelevant with optics.)

The easiest/fastest way to castrate a rifle’s ballistics is to reduce its barrel length.

Link Posted: 3/28/2024 7:03:39 PM EDT
[#11]
You need one of every length.

But 11.5/14.5/16 are the sweet spot.

PSA at least use to get some 18” FN chrome lined “machine gun steel” barrels in.

20" plus a suppressor is way too long and I don't shoot unsuppressed so I have no use for it.

Maybe an A5 version (20” with collapsing stock)

I have an 11.5" and a 16" with aimpoint pros. I really want an acog for my a2 clone but $1000 on an acog ain't an easy justification.

My only long range rifle at the moment is my sp1 with a Colt 3x20 scope.

Meh....
I have one, never shoot it.  I just have it at this point to say I have it.

Outside of very specific purposes, 20" 6.5G or 6ARC > 20" 5.56 if talking small frames.

It is not a question of 'need' OP.  It is 'want'. So yes, you do want a 20" AR to complete your stable

Extra velocity on a 20" gives you more play room on a distance call to hit smaller targets.  Can be useful while hunting varmints or during competition when don't have time to range exactly.

They also are soft shooters.

Fun to have at least one in the safe

Two 20" barrels (at least)

Heavy 20" for competition (service rifle) or

20"  heavy Varmint type upper for long range work.

20" pencil barrel retro type upper because they balance and carry around like a AR should for general shooting . Think Vietnam retro with 20" fixced stock iron sights that weighs 6+ lbs. Start adding bipods, optics and other stuff and it just gets heavy and cumberson

Keep in mind a 20" unless it is pencil can be a heavy bitch that you are really going to have a special purpose that needs the 20" or you will get tired of draging it around.

I have a Colt SOCOM and a Colt AR-15A4 with the VLTOR buffer and I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to shoot my SOCOM anymore since putting that buffer on the A4. Unless you're getting in and out of vehicles with a rifle on your lap like you're in Iraq the 20" does everything better. The only advantages in the shorter barrel is weight and aftermarket support, since there's a lot more stuff out there made for carbines than rifle lengths.

You gain range, terminal performance, reliability, longer part life, better sight radius, and less recoil. I think it's worth the slight weight increase.

20" is nice for reaching out a bit more. Velocity is cool. With that said, if you really want to smack something far enough out that you need the length you shouldalso consider other cartridges.

Also, just putting it out there, a suppressed 14.5-16" gun is better all-around than an unsuppressed 20". Naturally, you really should get both

Definitely need a 20” if you feel the craving. My A2 “clone-ish” is my all time favorite rifle. Ran it in a couple team matches and it was awesome.

I have real deal, KAC M16 rails I acquired. Probably enough for 3 or 4 rifles. They need a home.

They were in the garbage pile when a unit near mine shut down. They were actually going to throw them away!

There's really something more intimidating about a long barrel. Just like a 6" barrel magnum revolver looks more intimidating than a 3" one, a M16 looks more intimidating than a M4. There's a psychological factor.

Get it.  M16A2 was considered crew served on our M1A1 tanks, carried by the Loader.  My PSA 20" isn't an exact A2 clone but it's close enough for me.
