I bought a decommissioned International 4 series plow truck. 4x4, diesel, stake bed. Primarily bought it for construction and logging at the property but with some armor it would make a good option

Probably cheaper to buy a surplus APC of some sort than to build your own(if you want something that is done right)

Hmm, I do work between a NG base and the Alabama NG HQ.

There is some armor there.

But I'm sure they guard it pretty well.

Also, it has to have a v shaped dozer blade.

Protect the radiator and clear the road!

Also: Holy Shit, thick polycarbonate is EXPENSIVE!

Omg. lol. Just buy a used Brinks truck. When they junk them it’s by scrap metal weight.

How are you going to fuel the truck in a SHTF-scenario fuel may not be available around the corner station.

You don't have a 10,000 gallon buried tank?

Probably anything one-ton with a big block or diesel. Look at the homebrew APC’s that all the PMC’s were making in the first half of Iraq. It was a bunch of heavy steel plate welded to some base model F350’s.

Power wagon with 12V cummins would be my vote....but sure there is something I am not thinking about......oh wait...its a dodge....

(I say this as a dodge owner, still would buy my truck again though)

ETA...best a few times...

That’s awesome. I guess the angles help with approach and departure and maybe help deflect bullets but I see an amphibious vehicle. Doesn’t look that way judging from the doors but what’s the worst that could happen?

Some math: 10 MPG x 10,000 gallons = 100,000 miles!
That's a lot of circles to drive around your 10,000 gallon tank, unless you have a really long refueling hose.

Seems like when SHTF, fuel will be in short supply.  Also, gas stations will likely be dangerous places (like now in a lot of areas).

An armored truck would be a fun project, but I'm betting the guy on a motorbike will do just fine.

It’s a converted truck of some kind so not amphibious. It was only 10k and I think made of mild steel so not sure on the bullet rating part.

Pretty neat to have and ran.

I was excited for this thread.

This is one of my favorite mental masturbation topics.

I was very disappointed at the paucity of mx creations, some of their shit has been pretty interesting, including homebrew .50 mgs.

For me, I don't want an ambulance or a dump truck or a cash in transit vehicle. All of them will be more ragged the fuck out than a ex-police car taxi cab.

The ideal vehicle base is a short bus school bus. Big fucking motor, heavy chassis with air brakes, lots of ground clearance, designed to be beat on. Most are not, because they are school buses.

(also, building one of these has to be situationally based, not making the horse for the cart. I would want to be able to maneuver on hard ball carrying a few of my friends from home fort to places to obtain... things and back in general civil unrest.)

Armoring: lots of videos on how to make really decent armor from melting down certain types of plastics. Also, don't use a welding blanket if you are going the fiberglas laminate route. Buy ballistic nylon, guess what it was initially designed for before people realized you could make long-wearing bags out of it?

for the windows, state department has roll on laminates for glass that will stop a crazy level of fragmenting and people trying to bust windows. That's what I would use. Makes things a little fuzzy to see, but you wouldn't have to waste a lot of time melting poly to match the window curvature.

TL:DR

Unless you’re way out in the sticks, any running vehicle during any SHTF will be a target. Especially one that looks like it escaped the set of Mad Max.

You will soon be overwhelmed by the walkers.

Hi cap bicycle would be a better option. You’ll still have to fight to keep it.

I think for the money it would be hard to beat a medium duty truck of some sort. Harder to find 4x4 stuff but it's out there. Unless something changed they don't surplus US Armored vehicles so most of what you see is foreign military stuff that's old and beat up.

I want something like this I just need to figure out what I can and can't have with no CDL here.
