Saw that PSA has these on sale for $99. Thought it might be a fun little fun to teach my daughter to shoot with. Are they total junk, or decent quality? Can't really tell by the picture....are they like 1/2 scale, or close to a regular sized revolver? Will it last for a while, or just fall apart after a thousand rounds?
Never really wanted one...but for $99, it might be worth it just to tinker with. Thoughts? https://palmettostatearmory.com/heritage-rough-rider-22lr-6-5-revolver-blued-rr22b6.html |

Good deal, buy 3

They are maybe slightly smaller than a Ruger single six. My dad has one and I'm not impressed, it feels cheap and the manual safety they have is a crime against humanity.

I have the 22LR/22HMR cylinder swap version. Wear it on my hip in 22 HMR with rat shot for snakes as I mow and weed eat 10 acres. Have not cleaned in 3 years, goes bang every time. 4 rattlesnakes and many others are notched in the handle. Every now and again I load HP rounds and it’s accurate. I also shoot carpenter bees with rat shot. It will rust but who cares at that price. Would buy another tomorrow if I lost this one in the woods.
I meant wmr but bourbon. |

I can't say on newer ones but a .22 revolver at that price was a good trainer 20 years ago. This and a couple Chipmunks are what my boys started on. Moved up to a Bearcat each and the lil shits shoot expert now. I probably should have put them in dance lessons to save myself thousands and they would fit in better in today's world. On second thought, fuk that. They took an oath to The Constitution and believe it.

Hmmm........so far there is everything from "total junk, don't buy one".......to "great deal, I would buy it!!".
Hoping for more replies 😁 |

You might get a shooter. Mine was shooting over a foot to the left (sights not adjustable) at 15 yards. Got rid of it. Buy a Ruger Wrangler, PSA had them for $129 within the last 30 days.

$99 is a good price, and I like mine. It's the only single action SAA style of revolver I have and it's fun to shoot. I just ignore the stupid safety but they make a blank to fill the space if you want to remove it.

I bought two a year ago or so for that and a 25 dollar rebate.
They're decent little critter poppers as long as you don't expect much more of them. You will need to tighten a screw from time to time. |

They are a lot of fun, the ruger didn’t index to cylinders when I got it.
Well worth $100. |

i consider them junk

$99 is probably less than your local brick and mortar dealer pays for these at wholesale.
Are they good? What do yo want for a hundred bucks? They're worth that. |

Depends on if it fills a need for you.
for $99? Eh. Yeah. Sure, why not at that price. When I was looking at one in stores, the stupid fucking manual safety was a deal killer for me. If I get a SA revolver, it darn well better not have a manual safety. Poster above me says you can get a blank to fill it if you remove it but...they shouldn't have one in the first place. I think there's better .22 revolvers out there. But for a backyard tin can killer, why not. edited for stupidity haha ![]() |

I have a Traditions Rawhide Rancher .22. I paid $120 for it. It's similar to the Rough Rider, but without the goofy side safety. I like the rancher. It's pretty accurate for a fixed site single action revolver. It's a fun plinker, and I've used to to dispatch a possum messing with my cats.
Just realize that revolvers in this price range are somewhat disposable guns. While it's possible, it's not likely you'll wear them out. A .22 isn't exactly a powerhouse round which stresses the gun. I really wanted a Ruger Wrangler, which was $200, but I live in Minnesota. Yes, that's right, Minnesota is 1 of 2 states banning the Ruger Rangler .22 revolver. The frame's melting point makes it a Saturday Night Special in Minnesota. |

But for a backyard tin can killer, why not. For me personally, the heritage is much more appealing for $30 more. They're also coming with a manufacturer rebate for a free magnum cylinder, which is a killer deal and gives the little revolver some purpose besides plinking. 22 mag is a solid round for small game. View Quote Isn't the heritage Rough Rider link you provided for $130 the same thing as the one PSA has for $99? And yes, they have they free 22mag cylinder deal also. |
Dont get one if you have high expectations. Now if you just want a fun plinker for play then they are fine.
I bought one a couple years ago it was shooting high left i ended up bending front sight to the left and it centered it but a lil high at 25 yards or so but good at 35-50 yards.I ended up widening and filling the rear sight channel with jb weld and re cut a notch on the far right side. After this i rebent my front sight to almost straight and gun still shoots center and a tad high close but atleast the front sight is almost straight LOL. |
I have one. It's a piece of crap but it's reliable and shoots really well. Definitely worth the 100 bucks.
Nah, I'd get the Wrangler as mentioned. Atleast it looks like a real gun and not a cap gun that's been drilled out for .22s

View Quote I didn't check PSA but yes, thats the same one after I searched it. The rebate is there too. Thats a killer deal. I might scoop one for myself. I don't really need another single action, but heck, for that price (and I don't have a 22 mag revolver cylinder....hmmm) ![]() I have the 45 colt rough rider, awesome gun. |
Bought one for dispatching critters when trapping and killing snakes about 10-12 years ago. Can’t really comment on accuracy as I’ve never really shot anything more than five feet away. I removed the stupid safety the day I bought it, it has been dropped in mud, water and snow never been cleaned and always goes bang. It’s a decent gun for the above mentioned activities but if I lost it or it broke, I would probably replace it with a ruger wrangler.
Edited to add; I do not have a .22mag cylinder for mine. |
get the free 22WMR cylinder while you're at it, there is a rebate out for it.
They are well worth $100, just do not expect a $300 revolver. I own a couple of Ruger Wranglers that are more refined looking, but my Rough Rider has a better trigger and smoother action than either of the Ruger's. As others have mentioned, the safety is kind of ugly, but again, it is a $100 handgun. If it tells you anything, after seeing this thread, I went on PSA and ordered one for myself. It is future gift material if nothing else.
![]() edit to add: Heck, just realized the rebate is for a new .22 magnum cylinder. This goes from good deal to no brainer in my book! |
Our idea of a rough TDY was if the hotel did not have a swimming pool.
Lol I remember when my dad bought one 30 years ago. The was so crooked that he beat it against a telephone pole to get it to shoot remotely straight. Maybe the quality is better now but I’ve never forget that. It was hilarious
I got mine from Academy a few years ago, also came with the 22mag cylinder paid $129 or $139. Yeah I hate the safety, but it's been reliable, accuracy good enough i guess considering the sights, but for the price I'm satisfied its a cheap fun plinker.

Save up for the Ruger Wrangler.
Buy the gun, not the price ![]() If somethings only redeeming quality is "it's cheap", avoid it. |

I had a silver one years ago when they first came out. The finish just fell off of it and aiming was a guess.
I threw it in on a trade and it had stopped working. My friend Chuck had one and sometimes the cylinder would fall out when fired. |

Originally Posted By imq707s: Can someone please explain this funky side safety that's on the Rough Riders?? View Quote Having a colt action, the heritage does not use a transfer bar. The hammer directly hits the firing pin. It is thus unsafe to carry on a loaded chamber. The safety operates as a hammer block, preventing the hammer from reaching the firing pin. Up for safe, down for fire. With safety on, it's now safe to carry fully loaded rather than resting the hammer on an empty chamber. I would venture this is a whole lot cheaper to make than a transfer bar system like the Ruger, which oddly being about otherwise equal, sells for $100 more. A single six is now a $600 to $800 gun new. If you found a used one, it's gonna be about $400 .22lr only or $500 with both cylinders. The wrangler with both cylinders is about $280ish. I paid $107 otd in Nov 2022 for my RR with both cylinders after rebate. Not disappointed. |

The owner of my LGS told me not to buy any of the ones he had for sale.
He's a good dude. He said they were junk and to stay away. That was all I needed to hear. |

Do it. I think I have all of the barrel length models except the 12".
I have the 22lr/22wmr version, I havent shot it much but it seems like a pretty decent little gun for $129.
Sure it's cheap, and so are all the accessories they offer for it. Different cylinders, grips, holsters, all kinds of stuff honestly. A new cylinder is $25. I got the 4" with LR and Magnum cylinders. Sights suck but oh well.
