Gold hasn't increased in value since I started paying attention to it around 2005.

The dollar has dropped in value by roughly 65%

It was under $15/ounce in 2018. It is almost $10 more now.
Does not sound like about the same to me.

Wish I had bought more silver and gold in '18.
I got 2 oz of gold for $1,200/oz and 100 oz of silver (mix of 10 oz bars and 1 oz rounds) for $15.50 average.
May sell it off, I have been wanting to buy another motorcycle.

Central banks are and have been on a gold buying spree.  Inflation is heating back up and the fed is talking about rate cuts.  US fiscal deficit is out of control.  Expect gold to continue to climb.

Using the official inflation numbers that $15/ozt would be $18.50/ozt now. I think the federal fudging of the numbers and accounting for increased demand can explain why it's $24/ozt now.

Many do not consider it an investment, including myself.  Even if it were, the conclusion as to whether it's a good or bad one depends on the buy price.

With respects to gold or silver, there's a quite bit of arbitrage between SGE or India's market and COMEX.  Generally silver is $2 higher in those markets.

Gold and Silver purchased in 2018 are bigtime losers.

That does not even reflect dividend reinvestment, making it even worse.

There are periods of time where Gold has done quite well, but that isnt one of them.

The idea of the dollar going away seems to be a fantasy of yours.   You do realize that if this happens it won’t matter how much gold, silver, dirt you own, it will be a hellscape for everyone involved?   Everything will be scarce and hard to come by.  Social order will totally break down.  We will all be poor and miserable regardless of asset allocation.

The gold and silver might help preserve wealth on the other side of a collapse, but how many years will that be and will you survive to see it?

The return of gold as an investment reached almost 25 percent in 2020, and the annual average price of gold increased overall since 2015. The rate of return was 4.09 percent in 2023

The closing price for Bitcoin (BTC) between 2015 and 2024 is $69,455.34, yesterday. It is up 21,575.3% in that time. The latest price is $70,554
