One of the team was using this device during the show, any clue as to what it is? Some kind of FLIR camera or something?

Light guns are usually used to signal to aircraft when radio communications fail, but in the case of the Blue Angels, it is used as a reference point, marking the show center.

Thanks, I would have thought it would be hard to see from the air in the daylight. It didn't seem all that bright.

The support team on the roof of the stadium in LA for the superbowl had those using them. You’d be surprised how far you can see a focused light like that from the air.

I used to fly into Moline at night and there was a red beacon flashing on a obstacle that wasn’t marked on the charts. I kept asking the controllers what was there.

They said there was nothing they knew of.

I finally looked on a satellite map. It is the flashing red light at a 4 way stop at a he top of a small hill south of the airport. I could see it 20-30 miles away.

It is very focused I would imagine, seeing as it has a sighting device.
