Johnny Cash, ok, but Nickelback? Really? Aren't they banned by the Geneva Convention as instruments of torture?

It's looking great!

Have you considered doing a project book? Where you list the kids, and the jobs they did, along with pictures of construction and final results?
Or is it getting documented by your yearbook staff?

Yeah, the Cash and Nickelback threw me, but that's the Pandora mix they often play while working on the boat.

I made fun of them and was thoroughly rebuked.

Project book would be cool, but probably won't happen.  The yearbook staff hasn't shown any interest so far.  They concentrate mostly on documenting athletics.

The kids will get to sign the submarine when we are all finished.  There is talk of t-shirts by the core crew.  They were discussing those yesterday.  We will see how far that goes.

Obviously it is social engineering.  Johnny Cash for when they are good and Nickelback for when they are bad.  "Finish that section or it stays on Nickelback!"

Please don't add too much rust.

All german ships and U-Boats were VERY well maintained, especially at the beginning of the war.

Ditto for the tanks, trains, trucks and planes. I cringe everytime I see a picture of a rusted  and rotten german tank model.  In order to keep them running, they took care for their vehicles every day. There was little to none rust on a german tank. At the end of the war the tanks had only a short lifespan and no time to rot or rust to shit like many modelers built them.

Picture of U96 coming back from patrol:

There aren't any rust stains around the rivets.

You're going to hang it from the ceiling, in a skylight, it will be off the floor what? 10 12 feet? relax, however much rust you put there will be fine. Gee, some of these guys are a little too touchy on the subject of rust. Besides,  a Uboot coming back from patrol has probably not been painted in a while, it has probably seen some rough action, it would be expected that it look a little shop worn.

We know they aren't sending them, it's one of 5 tracks that will activate randomly.  Only one speaker and that's in the boat, so that's where the sound has to originate.

Almost done.

First group of students who worked for small portions signed their names on the boat today.

Darn near finished today.    We might move the stern out to check for paint cohesiveness tomorrow.

Update 2/4

We are soooooooo close to done.     Just a few more hours of paint on the deck, the cables from the stern to the conning tower, and then we should be done.

Tomorrow, if time permits we might get it out for paint matching.

Today:
The bow in it's final coloring, and rust combination.    We took some off, added a little here and there; blended others.

The stern deck getting painted......
Ignore the redneck gang member.....

You can see the stern rusting and weathering coming together, similar to the bow.   Hopefully then end up matching, but with the difference in lighting in the two areas, we are prepared to have to do some matching.

The screws going back on and getting some touch up around that area....

And a big thanks to  EBR666  He was very generous and gratious in offering to buy a gift certificate for the young lady who painted the miniature bust, to get her nails done for prom this April.    Truly amazing gesture.   She was very touched today when I gave her the envelope.  She's never had her nails done professionally.  She and several classmates were discussing how great this was going to be for her.   It was fun to watch.

Arfcommers are simply amazingly generous people.

The brochure to the salon she will be going to in April.

The torpedo is done and ready.   Tomorrow I will try to get the signatures of the main crew videoed so I can share that here.   They will sign in a separate area of the boat.

Here is the first group of signatures...

What about some bubbles around the torp, since they were ejected from the tube with compressed air?
These are available anywhere. You could epoxy or hot glue these to form bubbles.

Sorry I just thought of this today.

Hobby Lobby, or a  craft store would have these.

Or amazon Prime would have them there soon.

Oh, forgot to add,

Today got pretty interesting right at my lunch.  Student passed out on the way to a nearby class in the hallway.

I've had this happen 4 other times in my 20 yr career, but always, they've woken up only seconds after passing out.  Today, however, it scared me pretty good.  Student turned blue green, and I had to get the head adjusted to open the airway.

My next thought was.....oh shit, next is checking for a pulse, and breathing.....then cpr.

Right then, the student finally opened eyes and looked at me.  They told me they hadn't had anything to eat or drink all day.

SRO, v.principal both showed up, and took over.  They called for the ambulance,  but the mother ended up taking the student to the doctor.

Anyway, definitely broke up the normal day.

I am anxiously waiting the final product.........it's looking great.

I taught in Self Contained Behavioral settings for 22 years, the most interesting thing I experienced was a 4 hour soft lock down while one of our students delivered a baby in the nurse's very small office. The mother was a rather hefty girl, because she was fairly obese she was able to hide her pregnancy.

If you want some more sounds go to you tube and search for u boat sounds. They are mostly for long plays

and for helping you sleep as an ambient noise.

Yup, that was my plan too.  Leave the sign.  Should make for quite a laugh someday.

Sonar ping tip...

Try setting up an additional, not perfectly synched ping player elsewhere in the room (on the other side).  The two separate pinger a will sound like reverb and create a cool effect).

More often than not, a surprise torpedo attack would result in a giant phallic-shapped hunk of metal harmlessly clanging off the underside of a depth-charge-laden warship. This is not ideal.

Update 2/5.1

I want you folks to know that the videos and links you post are very helpful.    Today I showed the video of the Sun Pens to all of my classes while they worked in the 2D room.

Facinating video.  There were a bunch of kids gone today for activities so it was a good day for this.

The sign secured on the inside of the bow section.

The deck details almost all done.
The cables went on today.

Many of my main crew were gone today, so the signing won't happen till Monday.  We will also work on the bubbles if they get here early enough.
