I've often wondered when it stops sucking.  I started this journey on 3/3/2023.  I'm a few days short of a year into this, and while all my metrics have improved:  I'm faster, stronger, leaner, higher VO2 Max, more endurance, etc.  It still sucks.  

2014 my 1mi time was 12min.  My 5k was 40min.  (farthest back I have logged runs)

2023 nothing had improved, and I ran infrequently at best, just a couple times a year. On 5/30/2023 I ran a 43min 5k.  

Here I am now running sub 25min 5k with a goal of going sub 23 this summer and close in on that 20min 5k by the end of the year.  I'm running farther than I ever have and will knock out my first 1/2 marathon here in a month.  Goal of completing my first marathon before the end of the year.

But it still sucks.  It sucks every run for the first one or two miles until I get in the zone.  Then it sucks the last one or two miles to close it out.  When does it stop sucking?

SIDE NOTE:  One of my friends has a kid going off to college this year.  He just ran his last track meet where he ran a 4:31mi and was 7th in district with that time.  Didn't even podium in highschool with a 4 and a half min mile.  AND couldn't get a single track scholarship.

I had planned on racing a 5k tomorrow, with DD2 starting by herself as well, then I'd turn around after finishing to find her and run with her the rest of the way.
Mothers being how they are, the plan is now for me to run the entire thing with her.

Thankfully she will be moving under her own power. This will be her first 5k.

The suck stops when you stop trying to improve.

I was hurting so badly at the .75 mark that I stopped and walked for about ten seconds. Then I realized I was being a pussy and pushed on. I then stopped again with .1 left to go. I walked for about 5 seconds. Then got back on it and gave it all I had to the end. I was not tracking my pace but truly just trying to give best effort.

If I would have just never stopped running I would have either crushed my previous or or crashed and burned with .05 left to go. I’m not sure what one it would have been, but it pissed me off that I was on pace to get into the 6’s and I stopped.

When it stops pissing you off when you quit on yourself and you stop trying to improve, it will stop sucking. And that would suck.

I can get on board with this. When seconds feel like minutes and all you want to do is slow down, that's the ball grabber. And what really sucks when you give up early, is now you sorta lost that attempt. You have to go through it all again if you want to know if you can do it.

You lose an attempt, but at the same time you learn something about yourself. Maybe you mentally bitched out, maybe it was physically. Did you know which one it was before? Did you know what it really felt like to hit the limit, or did your brain get in the way. Was it your will or was it survival and protection kicking in? You won’t know unless you push it and if you don’t push it, you won’t learn about you. Never stop learning. Never stop pushing.

Can I ask for some advice?

My marathon is next Saturday. I’m nervous about what’s going to hold me accountable after this marathon. Plus our 3rd child is due in June so I will have some extra obstacles to overcome.

For the last 4 months I have had every run tracked and loaded onto my watch. I walk up my driveway hit the run activity, and had a scheduled run loaded.

I would like to do a 50k/50 miler next year.

Any advice on what a good number of Miles per week I should maintain?   Objectives to complete to stay on track but get back to a semi normal life?

I was thinking of no less than 30-40 miles per week. With at least one long run (12-17miles)

Good luck on the big race.  Please let us know how it goes!  I would think 30-40 mpw would keep you in solid shape and let you jump into 50k/50m ultra territory with a great base.  No idea what a training plan for that looks like, but don't overthink it.  Get the miles in that you can.  Mix in speed, slow, long workouts.  

You might consider building some workouts into your watch so you can continue to have your run detail determined prior to waking up in the morning.  Daily suggested workout can also feed you runs, but I'm not sure if it will provide the level of training you're after.  I'm only 2 weeks into a watch that has DSW so maybe it can be geared towards ultra training, unsure.  

Congrats on the kid.  I have 3 myself.  Between that, work, wife, chores, etc it makes for a busy life.  Babies are a whole 'nother multiplier!

It has been a minute since I've updated.

Have been using Daily Suggested Workouts on my new watch (FR955).  I like it, but it doesn't seem to be providing the miles I want.  So I've been slowly trying to add additional miles on the end of my workout.  Unsure if that will help 'train' DSW to start giving me longer runs?  For example, it loves to feed me 30 minute 'base' runs when I'm used to 45-75 minute base runs without using DSW.  My long run tomorrow is planned for 51 minutes, when I'm normally out for at least 90, most Saturdays over 2 hours.

Whoa!

I didn't know this thread existed.

Does the treadmill count?

My office has a gym and I can workout pre post or during my shift.

My normal routine is walk 1 mile, run 5. If I'm off and don't have to do anything it's walk 3, run 5 especially when I have a good audiobook to listen to.

I will add my running log here in a bit when I calculate it off the underarmor app.

Thanks for that!  I’ll let you guys know.  These last taper weeks are pretty glorious.  

My kids and family really know how to humble my ass….I am out here just trying to make sure I don’t die during my first marathon. They say “are you going to win?”  “Well doesn’t everyone get a medal?”  My grandma tells me I should try and do the Boston marathon.
